Ubisoft is sticking with the million-dollar flop Skull and Bones and has surprisingly extensive plans for the pirate MMO with its new roadmap for 2025.

The ambitious pirate MMO Skull and Bones swallowed hundreds of millions of US dollars and still fell miles short of players’ expectations. Given Ubisoft’s ongoing cost-cutting measures, one would expect Skull and Bones to fall victim to the red pen and be scrapped.

But quite the opposite: Ubisoft is going full steam ahead in its second year and delivering numerous features that fans of the game have been wanting since its release with its roadmap for 2025.

Try it for free: You can try Skull and Bones from April 17 to April 20, 2025 completely free of charge, including crossplay It doesn’t matter if you’ve played it before. PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC are supported. If you like Skull and Bones, you can also purchase it on Steam until April 20 with a 50 percent discount for $20.

The roadmap for Year 2 at a glance

Season 1: Ascent into Chaos

  • Start: April 16, 2025

  • Item Ascention: Base damage values and modifiers can be improved in a new way with silver and raw materials from local merchants.

  • World Levels: Optional difficulty levels that give you better rewards. The current maximum is World Level 2.

  • Endgame content is being reworked: Crafting materials can be produced in your own factories, and there is a new upgrade tree with additional improvements.

  • Death Tides: New PvP team mode in which you can use your own ships as well as predefined ships. This allows you to optionally use weapons that you haven’t unlocked yet. You can also summon sea monsters and have them fight for you.

  • Various quality-of-life improvements: These include a revamped map and mini-map, as well as improved visibility of weak points.

    Season 2: Oaths of War

    • Start: Expected summer 2025

    • No restart in the end game: Eight pieces and the manufacturing levels will no longer be reset.
    • Large ships: With the frigate, you can unlock the first large ship, which has additional weapon slots, among other things.

    • Megafort: The Compagnie Royale has built a particularly powerful fortress that holds valuable resources.

    • Disputed Waters: You must choose between the Compagnie Royale and the Dutch Trading Company, and you will receive unique advantages depending on your decision.

    Season 3: Guts and Glory

    • Start: Expected in fall 2025
    • Land Combat: It will be possible to fight enemies on land. More information will follow.

    • Officers: You can rescue officers and assign them to your ships. They will then receive unique advantages.

    • Reputation system: No further information is available at this time. Presumably, you will be able to earn a positive or negative reputation with the various factions, which will result in advantages or disadvantages.

Season 4: Eye of the Beast

    • Start: Expected winter 2025/26

    • Kraken: A gigantic, legendary kraken appears in the game world and can be fought.
    • New Large Ship: The corvette is being added.

    • Hunter’s Guild: You can join the Hunter’s Guild and reap even more rewards from hunting powerful creatures.

    • Territorial Control: No further information is available at this time. Presumably, you will be able to control certain areas and receive additional bonuses on resources, similar to the Rudder’s manufactories.

It remains to be seen whether Ubisoft can turn things around with the content for 2025 and win back the favor of sea dogs. In any case, the wishes of the community are being addressed. The new large ships in particular were requested at release.

However, what is still missing is the ability to board your enemies’ ships and continue fighting on deck. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag already did this over ten years ago. And the recently released action role-playing game Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii also features this feature.
