Minnesota RØKKR could win the 5th Major in the Call of Duty League, now the Championship is coming up. We spoke to CoD pro Standy about his team’s chances
The Call of Duty League 2021 is getting into the hot phase. On 19 August, the Championship kicks off the playoffs and is looking for the best CoD team in the world. The decision on who will be crowned CDL champion will be made on Sunday, 22 August and will be broadcast on ProSieben MAXX from 11 pm.
Eight teams have qualified for the season finale, including Minnesota RØKKR. The team caused one of the biggest surprises in CDL history at the 5th Major. In the final against Toronto Ultra, the roster managed a perfect reverse sweep after trailing 4-0. In the end, RØKKR secured the title, leaving their opponents in awe.
“I think the reverse sweep was definitely one of, if not the best CDL comeback ever. You haven’t seen anything like it before,” RØKKR pro Eli “Standy” Bentz therefore also raves about the organisation’s biggest CoD success to date in an interview with esports.com.
Underdog or secret favourite?
Since the surprise Major victory at the latest, Minnesota has played itself into the focus of the other teams. At the Championship, the opponents should therefore no longer be so easy to catch off guard.
“Since we won the 5th Major, the other teams will look closely at how we played. They will try to find a way to beat us,” Standy is sure. So for the season’s grand finale, the 20-year-old’s roster will have to step up again. “We need to work on our mistakes from Major 5 and also add new things to our strategy. So our opponents won’t know what to expect and it will be uncomfortable for them,” said the CDL pro.
Nevertheless, Standy cannot imagine that favourites like Atlanta FaZe or Dallas Empire are now trembling before RØKKR:
Some people think we are a threat now. But there are still teams that don’t see us as an absolute top team. They still underestimate us.
The unexpected success has given Minnesota a boost. But no one at RØKKR is really comfortable with the role of secret favourite. “I think everyone in our team still sees us as underdogs,” says Standy. However, the “Player of the Stage” of the 5th CDL Major does not want to give up completely:
“As long as we play our game, I’m sure we’ll win a match or two at the Championship. “
