According to insider Tom Henderson, the next Battlefield after BF 2042 will be a Hero Shooter that develops Specialists.
Battlefield is changing a lot right now. Not only long-time fans feel this, but EA itself officially announced that they want to create a Battlefield universe that connects different games. According to EA, they will be developed by different studios – and the next Battlefield will allegedly be a hero shooter.
At least that’s what the well-known insider Tom Henderson claims, who has usually been spot on with his predictions so far. We summarise the current rumours for you.
New Battlefield as Hero Shooter?
According to Henderson, the specialists of Battlefield 2042, who are controversial among fans, are only a first step. In the next part, everything will revolve around the heroes with special abilities – as is usual in a hero shooter. From the very beginning, Battlefield 2042 was intended as a stepping stone:
The next Battlefield title is scoped as a hero shooter of sorts – It’s not a removal of specialists, but an enhancement of them. Battlefield2042 has always been intended to be a stepping stone to a “hero shooter” with a Battle Royale – It was just poorly executed.

Interestingly, it was only a few days ago that Vince Zampella took over the reins of the entire Battlefield franchise. The Respawn founder was previously responsible for Titanfall and Apex Legends, among others – i.e. for a more classic shooter that gave rise to a free-to-play Hero Shooter. In this context, Henderson’s statements seem even more credible.
However, he himself warns that his information should nevertheless be viewed with healthy scepticism. In principle, EA’s plans can still change in the future – so we will have to be patient for a while until there is official information.
Hero shooters have been in vogue since around 2016. Back then, Overwatch started a new big hype around the genre. Titles like Battleborn, Apex Legends, Valorant or Paladins followed. Some classic multiplayer and tactical shooter brands such as Quake Champions or Rainbow Six: Siege also increasingly took the path towards hero shooters.
