An old Call of Duty classic caused record numbers on Twitch during a tournament at the weekend. Here’s what’s behind it.

What was going on? Over the weekend, a long-forgotten Call of Duty title caused record-breaking viewership on Twitch.

CoD: Vanguard overtaken

Old love never rusts, as the saying goes. This was proven by a tournament stream of Modern Warfare 3 on Twitch over the weekend. More than 400,000 people watched the stream of a Spanish Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 event. Numbers that any organiser can only dream of and that even CoD: Vanguard could not reach at release (330,000 viewers). At the peak of the stream, (Twitchtracker.com) recorded 417,255 viewers which means an increase in average viewers of 13,800% for Modern Warfare 3 for the month of March.

Why the eleven-year-old game suddenly enjoyed such popularity on Twitch was initially unclear. However, it later turned out that the Spanish streamer IlloJuan organised a throwback tournament of MW 3, in which some big names took part. The well-known Spanish streamers Ibai (9.3 million Twitch followers) and TheGrefg (10 million Twitch followers), who are among the biggest streamers in Spain, played in the tournament and thus helped the event to achieve unexpectedly high viewer numbers.
