Is CoD 2023 a DLC or a sequel?

According to various insider reports, CoD MW2 was originally planned to run for two years. Accordingly,CoD 2023 would have been released as a major addon and not as a sequel.

These plans were (but apparently scrapped): The project outgrew its DLC boundaries and developer Sledgehammer Games was reportedly tasked with making the update a full-price sequel . However, these statements cannot be independently verified.

The fact that CoD 2023 will be a stand-alone game and will be called Modern Warfare 3 (or stylised “Modern Warfare III”) has been officially confirmed. Here is the first teaser trailer:

Release: When will Modern Warfare 3 be released?

The new MW3 will be released worldwide at the same time on November 10, 2023 The Insider (Tom Henderson) had already leaked the date in advance, now it is officially confirmed.

Henderson also mentions some more concrete dates for the beta and pre-access. These are currently still to be classified as speculation:

  • Beta for PlayStation: 6 to 10 October 2023.
  • Beta for all platforms: 12 to 16 October 2023
  • Preliminary campaign access: 2 November 2023
  • Season 1 of MW3: December 5, 2023

Even if these leaked dates are accurate, there may still be some shifts in the schedule.

When is the Reveal? In detail MW3 will be revealed during an ingame show in Warzone. The event is called Shadow Siege and will take place in-game on August 17, 2023.

Gameplay: What do we already know about the gameplay of Modern Warfare 3?

This is officially known: CoD 2023 will be a direct successor to Modern Warfare 2. The engine of MW2 will also be adopted and is also – unlike in previous years – not to change for future CoD offshoots. Weapons and operators unlocked in MW2 will remain in the sequel – for the first time in the series.

This is what the rumours say: Leaks show that MW3 will bring back the classic minimap of previous CoD parts, which should make veterans especially happy. In addition, Perks will be linked to a new Gear system. This means that the coveted “Ninja” perk will also return. MW3 is primarily being developed by Sledgehammer (Cod WW2, CoD Vanguard).

But at least a few leaked screenshots reveal that at least two familiar multiplayer maps will return, namely Terminal and Scrapyard. Both will be slightly adapted as usual in the series, but will remain the same in terms of the basic structure.

Content: Campaign, multiplayer, co-op, warzone – what’s in Modern Warfare 3?

Modern Warfare 3 is rumoured to be a full-fledged Call of Duty again, with all the parts that go with it:

  • Solo campaign: The story ties directly into MW2, the focus is probably the well-known villain Makarov (infamous for the mission “No Russian” from the old Modern Warfare 2).
  • 6vs6-Multiplayer: Regular multiplayer matches will of course be back. War Mode from CoD WW2 will return, according to leaks. Weapons from MW2 will be carried over.
  • Zombies: Developer Sledgehammer is reportedly planning the return of the co-op zombie mode. It would then replace the SpecOps missions or raids.
  • Warzone integration: Of course, MW3 will also be integrated back into the Free2Play offshoot Warzone, including DMZ. According to insider sources, a new Warzone map will launch with Season 1 of MW3. The map is said to be extremely reminiscent of the popular Verdansk from the first Warzone part.

Platforms: What will Modern Warfare 3 be released on?

We firmly assume that the new CoD will once again be released for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as Xbox One and X/S . Since the direct predecessor also appeared on Steam, it stands to reason that Modern Warfare 3 will also land on Valve’s platform again.
