What are the different types of ammunition in Modern Warfare 2 and which ones should you keep your hands off?

There are six unique ammunition types in Modern Warfare 2, each offering advantages or disadvantages in different situations. We explain what the different ammunition types can do and in which situations they can be used.

Extensively tested

As is unfortunately usual with Call of Duty, the developers are also keeping quiet about the exact details of the different ammunition types in Modern Warfare 2.

While we are still provided with a relatively large amount of information about the function and influence of weapon attachments such as grips, barrels and muzzles, we know what the properties of the different ammunition types are, but not how well they implement them.

YouTuber and CoD expert TheXclusiveAce has therefore taken a closer look at the various ammunitions and tested them extensively on a private server for their advantages and disadvantages.

The bullet penetration power in particular is changed with many types of ammunition. The higher the level of bullet penetration, the thicker and stronger materials we can penetrate to take out enemies entrenched behind them.

Decay: The decay ammo ensures that healing is delayed for hit enemies. Normally players heal themselves after about 5 seconds after being hit with the Decay Ammo, this time period is increased by almost 100%.

  • Benefit: Delays onset of enemy healing from 5 to 10 seconds.
  • Disadvantage: Bullet penetration -5 % (minus 1 level)

Hollow point: This ammunition prevents your enemies from sprinting when hit. However, the effect is only triggered when hit in the legs. Head, torso or arms are not affected.

  • Benefit: Prevents and interrupts the sprint of opponents.
  • Disadvantage: Only affects when hit in the legs, projectile speed -7.5%, projectile penetration -5% (-1 level)

Armor Piercing: As the name suggests, Armour Piercing ammunition is particularly effective against armour and armoured targets. Thanks to its tungsten reinforcement, this ammunition does higher damage to armour and can penetrate more surfaces.

  • Benefit: +40% vehicle damage, bullet penetration +1 level.
  • Disadvantage: Bullet speed -7.5 %

Burn: As with Armour Piercing Ammunition the name says it all. Incendiary ammunition adds a fire effect to your weapon that deals about 4-6 extra damage per hit. In addition, the vehicle damage is increased by about 50 %. However, the disadvantages of the ammunition are enormous.

  • Benefit: 4-6 extra damage per hit, vehicle damage +50 %.
  • Disadvantage: Bullet speed -25%, effective range -10%, you lose all penetrating power and cannot penetrate surfaces

Overpressure +P: The overpressure ammunition makes enemies recoil more when hit and thus makes it more difficult for them to hit you. Especially in the fight against snipers this effect gives you a small advantage.

  • Advantage: Enemy flinch +50 %.
  • Disadvantage: Slightly increased recoil

High velocity: High velocity ammunition is every sniper’s dream. Thanks to the increased projectile velocity, you can hit targets at long distances much more easily without having to live with serious disadvantages.

  • Advantage: Projectile speed +50 %.
  • Disadvantage: Effective range -2.5 %

The High Velocity and Armor Piercing Ammunition in particular offer many more advantages than disadvantages in Modern Warfare 2. While the former plays an important role for snipers and in matches on larger maps, the armour-piercing ammunition is effective in almost every situation and thus also useful.

So if you have any space left in your weapon attachments, you should give one of the two ammo types a chance.

Important in Warzone 2.0

Although armour-piercing ammunition currently plays only a minor role in Modern Warfare 2, it should be found much more frequently in the loadouts in Warzone 2.0 due to the enemies often equipped with armour (armour plates).

The rumours that armour-piercing ammunition increases your weapon damage against players through appropriate tuning have turned out to be false, by the way. As TheXclusiveAce explains in a video, the apparently increased damage can be traced back to faulty tests.
