In Modern Warfare 2 you have to link your account with a mobile phone number, according to Battle.net. The system requirements themselves are moderate.

What do you need to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on the PC? This question has two answers: On the one hand, there are the system requirements, which are still from the beta and are quite moderate for a current shooter. And then there is the required mobile phone number, which already caused displeasure at the launch of Overwatch 2. Find out what”s behind it here.

If you”re already looking forward to the release of Modern Warfare 2, check out the chic launch trailer to fuel your anticipation:

These are the system requirements

So far, only the required power for the Modern Warfare 2 open beta has been announced. But since this took place only a few months before the release and thus showed the game already in a quite finished state, we assume that hardly anything will change here.

This means that the system requirements for Modern Warfare 2 are quite moderate. However, the hardware requirements will of course be even higher if you play at higher resolutions or want more than 60 FPS.

The hard drive space of 25 GB required in the beta will probably increase, after all we didn”t have to download the campaign and all the other content that wasn”t part of the test here yet. But there is good news here, too, if your hard drive is already filled to bursting. Because you no longer automatically download the Battle Royale Warzone along with the game!

What about the phone number?

The product pages of Modern Warfare 2 on (Battle.net) and (Steam) are marked with the notice that you have to link your account with the platform to a phone number in order to use the game. A (Support article) provides more information:

  • All accounts must be linked to a phone number.
  • Each phone number can only be linked to one account.
  • Only SMS-enabled mobile phones are supported.
  • The service does not work with messenger apps (WhatsApp etc.), Voice over IP, and some prepaid phones.
  • If you change the phone but keep the number, everything will continue to work as usual.

Why is Blizzard doing this?

On the one hand, linking a phone number is supposed to serve certain security functions. So you can use your phone to get messages about suspicious activity on your account, or unlock a locked account, as well as reset your password.

But a second reason is to deal with cheaters and toxic players: This makes it less easy for them to create a new account if they have been banned for their behaviour.

Could this become a problem?

In Overwatch 2 the same measure had previously been taken, which led to great displeasure among players. There are several reasons for this:

  • Players are excluded: Those who do not have a mobile phone contract, or even no mobile phone at all, cannot play. Prepaid customers in particular felt unfairly treated, as some of them simply cannot afford a contract.
  • Prerequisites are unclear: Some prepaid tariffs seem to work with the new rules, while, other numbers seem to be excluded arbitrarily. In addition, numbers that were part of a prepaid tariff at an earlier point in time may also not work.

In Overwatch 2, Blizzard softened the phone number rules after the reaction from the community. Whether this option will also be considered for Modern Warfare 2, however, remains to be seen.
