CoD Modern Warfare 2 won”t start: The most common errors and what you can do about them

There”s probably nothing more annoying than pre-ordering a game and then it doesn”t work properly. What you can do about error messages and crashes in Modern Warfare 2, we tell you here.

The time has come: Pre-orderers can already play the campaign of CoD Modern Warfare 2 – but not everyone. Some players have start-up problems and have to deal with crashes and error messages. So that you too can soon plunge into battle, we have summarised the most common errors with the appropriate solutions.

But before you start looking for your specific problem, you should first check whether your PC meets the requirements of the latest Call of Duty. If not, this can also lead to crashes.

Error 1: DLC Pack not installed

If you”re getting the message that one or more single player DLC packs are missing, you”re not alone. The problem seems to be a particular annoyance for PlayStation 5 owners.

First make sure that all packs are installed. Check the Manage Game Content tab on your console, where you should be able to see all the packs separately. If that doesn”t help, the classic solution often helps: uninstall the entire game and download it again.

You should now be able to see each individual pack in the installation menu. This way, you can be sure that everything will end up on your console – including the multiplayer pack! You won”t be able to play multiplayer until the real release on 28 October, but installing the pack seems to help some players.

Error 2: Change Activision ID

Some players stumble across the message that their current username is supposedly not allowed on Activision – where the ID does not contain any questionable vocabulary. Patience is required for this error, as many players were able to avoid the unwanted message by simply restarting the game several times.

Other users, on the other hand, wanted to change their name, as is required, but did not immediately get anywhere. Allegedly, they do not have a token to change it – which is also not true. Here, too, it is probably worth having a lot of patience. Some players have restarted MW2 several times and tried again and again to change the name until it worked as if by magic.

Failure 3: Xbox – you”re too early

Microsoft”s console is not exempt from start-up problems with MW2 either. Some players are reporting an error message saying that they are supposedly trying to launch the game too early and they still have to wait until release

Again, make sure that all campaign packs are installed. You can find the overview under Manage Game and Add-ons. The next time you start the game, everything should work again.

If not, it has helped some users to change their time zone to a US one, or to restart the Xbox console several times.

Modern Warfare 2 does not start

If you are having general difficulties getting the game to run at all, the following suggested solutions may help you:

  • All drivers up to date? Make sure graphics drivers, Windows and co. don”t need an update.
  • Launch as admin: Whether via Steam or Battle.net – give the respective launcher admin permission.
  • Nvidia Instant Replay and ShadowPlay: Some players may often have trouble when Nvidia”s recording program is enabled in the background. Turn it off and try again.
  • Turn off overclocking: Just about every Call of Duty has trouble when players overclock their graphics card or processor. Therefore, turn it off, and with any luck, you won”t have any more problems.

Modern Warfare 2 crashes while playing

If you have no problems starting the game, but then the title keeps crashing in the middle of it, then the following tips may help:

  • Install the game on drive C: Strictly speaking, you should install the game where you have placed your Steam client. In most cases, this is the drive C.
  • Framerate-Limit: Check the settings of Modern Warfare 2 to see if the “Custom Framerate Limiter” has a higher refresh rate than that of your monitor. If so, set it lower and your problem might be solved.
  • Restart missions: If your game crashes, do not restart at the last checkpoint, but restart the entire mission. While this is annoying as you lose your mission progress, it seems much less likely to crash again directly.

How is the campaign going so far? What problems have you encountered? Do you have any suggestions for solutions that we haven”t reported on yet? And while you”re busy playing, what do you think of the story? Let us know in the comments!
