CoD Warzone 2!

Call of Duty’s Battle Royale will get a sequel that launches as early as 2023; insiders speak out on release, platforms and content.

Shooter fans will have plenty to look forward to in 2022: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have now been officially announced. There is no extensive image and video material on the new part of the Battle Royale offshoot yet, but there is a lot of information – both official and unofficial. We reveal what we know about Warzone 2 so far.

This is what is officially known about Warzone 2

When is CoD Warzone 2 scheduled to be released

Thanks to a post in the (official developer blog) we already knew that the battle royal shooter will be released this year. But now, due to a leak, there is also an exact date: Warzone 2 will be released as early as 16 November 2022, according to an Activision document. However, there is no official confirmation yet.

This is just a few weeks after the release of Modern Warfare 2, which we know will be released on October 28, 2022.

Old content cannot be transferred to Warzone 2

Bad news has since been confirmed by the developers: You will not be able to transfer your Warzone content that you have earned over the years to the successor, so you will have to start from scratch. This concerns operators, blueprints and weapon skins.

Thanks to crossover events with Attack on Titan, Snoop Dogg or Godzilla vs. Kong, among others, many Warzone veterans have already earned a large selection of content, which they will have to say goodbye to when they switch to the successor. In Warzone 1, of course, all content will continue to exist.

What new features will Warzone 2 offer?

New engine for Warzone 2 and MW2: The developers have already confirmed that Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are based on a new engine and have therefore been developed from scratch.

Not an update, but a true successor: Warzone 2 is supposed to be anything but an update in terms of scope and innovations. We are dealing with an independent title that wants to make many of the design decisions of its predecessor different – and above all better!

New Sandbox Mode: Not much is known about this yet. However, the developers have already promised that fans should receive more information about what is behind it in the near future.

New progression system
: Hardly anything is more important for long-term motivation in multiplayer shooters than a good, balanced and above all rewarding progression system. Warzone 2 wants to have some innovations up its sleeve on this front, but they haven’t presented them in more detail yet.

Return of familiar maps: According to Henderson, fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 can once again look forward to a remake of familiar levels. This should also have an impact on Warzone 2, as the maps there are to be realised as POIs. The maps will be Quarry, Terminal, Afgan and the classic Highrise. There was already a hidden teaser for Highrise in the latest trailer:

Two big maps in the works? According to Tom Henderson (via Exputer) there are two big maps in development for Warzone. However, they will probably not be available right at launch. There are no concrete details about the maps at the moment, but according to Henderson they should be similar in principle to those of Warzone 1.

This means that there will be a larger map in the style of Verdansk or Caldera and a smaller one similar to Rebirth Island – Henderson assumes that the latter could appear at the latest towards the end of 2023.

Strongholds: According to Henderson, these strongholds will be a new variable in Warzone 2’s gameplay. The strongholds are to be distributed in small and large variants across the game world and populated by enemy AI. Those who capture the stronghold will be rewarded with access to their own loadout, among other things. In addition, each stronghold can only be captured once per game.

Warzone 2 and DMZ
: Allegedly Warzone 2 and the new game mode Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) share one and the same game world.

Warzone 2 to get lots of post-launch content

You apparently don’t have to worry that Warzone 2 will run out of steam in terms of content after just a few months. For the time after the launch, they promise regular and free content updates, which should deliver new maps, new modes, seasonal events, community celebrations and more.

What platforms will Warzone 2 be released on?

Warzone 2 will serve as wide a range of systems as possible, namely: PC (via Battle.net and also on Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

This announcement is causing displeasure among the gaming community. Instead of being happy about the large number of target platforms, some fans fear that sticking to the old consoles could become a technical pitfall for Warzone 2. The tenor: people didn’t buy a new console for no reason, only to be held back by the old platforms.

Owners of the Sony console are not to be excluded despite Activision’s takeover by Microsoft. Accordingly, we can certainly expect crossplay between the consoles and the PC again. Most likely, the anti-cheat Ricochet will be used again, with which Warzone is already enjoying success!

What will happen to Warzone then?

It is currently unknown whether Warzone will run parallel to Warzone 2 for a while. Most likely, the servers will not be switched off directly, but will continue to run – after all, the multiplayer modes of old CoD games are still available.

We suspect that Warzone will simply not get any new seasons when Warzone 2 is released. As soon as we have information about this, we will let you know immediately.
