Call of Duty Warzone 2

Call of Duty’s Battle Royale will get a sequel, launching as early as 2023; insiders give their views on release, platforms and content.

Update of 11 February 2022: There’s the thing – or, to be precise: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have been confirmed. The sad news: there’s still no extensive info, let alone image or trailer footage.

However, the developers have already revealed some interesting details. For example, that Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have received a new engine and have been developed from scratch.

Warzone 2 is said to be a massive evolution of the Battle Royale genre compared to its predecessor. There is also talk of a new sandbox mode.

By the way, in an (official blog entry) Infinity Ward was also confirmed as the lead development studio.

What do the influencers say? Some Youtube and Twitch personalities got some more info or statements during a meeting with the developers, which we have collected for you:

  • Warzone 2 is supposed to give players much more freedom in their play style compared to the first part
  • The new engine is supposed to power all CoDs in the future and be significantly more powerful
  • Warzone 1 is now said to be unsurprisingly facing foreseeable retirement, possibly after Season 3

We’ll be able to play Call of Duty: Warzone 2 as early as next year if current rumours turn out to be true. And behind the still unconfirmed info are, after all, well-known and mostly very well-informed insiders like Jason Schreier, Tom Henderson and CharlieIntel. We summarise what they have to say about the successor.

Nevertheless, please note that these are unofficial details that publisher Activision has not yet commented on. Also, schedules and content are subject to change prior to release.

What Insiders Say About CoD Warzone 2

When should CoD Warzone 2 be released?

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier narrows down the release timeframe of Warzone 2 to the year 2023. He doesn’t give a specific date – and that’s probably not even set internally yet.

Late 2022 will also see the release of another new Call of Duty, developed by Infinity Ward – it’s Modern Warfare 2, which we already know a lot about through leaks. For example, there are supposed to be new modes inspired by Rainbow Six: Siege and Hunt Showdown.

Apparently Activision is not (yet) saying goodbye to the annual rhythm even after the takeover by Microsoft. This would be a huge opportunity

How should Warzone 2 differ from its predecessor?

According to industry insider Tom Henderson, it will be a completely new game, with no weapons, skins or anything else carried over from CoD Warzone. So you should be prepared for new maps and new equipment.

CharlieIntel also suspects that Warzone 2 will be completely detached from Modern Warfare (2019) and deliver better graphics and tech, among other things. The previous basic framework is simply too outdated.

Modern Warfare 2, which will be released at the end of 2022, is therefore the obvious new basis. After all, Infinity Ward has already laid the foundations for a Battle Royale in the CoD universe.

Which platforms will Warzone 2 be released on?

This information also comes from Henderson: Allegedly Warzone 2 will be a pure current-gen title. This means that it will only be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and will bring corresponding technical advances.

Owners of the Sony console are not to be excluded despite Activision’s takeover by Microsoft. Accordingly, we can certainly expect cross-play between the consoles and the PC again. Most likely, the anti-cheat Ricochet will be used again, with which Warzone is already enjoying success:

What will happen to Warzone then?

It is currently unknown whether Warzone will continue to run in parallel with Warzone 2 for a while. Most likely, the servers will not be switched off directly, but will continue to run – after all, the multiplayer modes of old CoD games are still available.

We suspect that Warzone will simply not get any new seasons when Warzone 2 is released. As soon as we have information about this, we will let you know immediately.
