NFTs and Call of Duty, can it work? A new leak now suggests this combination and is worrying the CoD community.

Few topics have been as polarising as NFTs in recent months. According to a leak, there is now discussion about their introduction in new Call of Duty titles.

NFTs and CoD?

According to insiders (RalphsValve), Activision is also considering the introduction of NFTs as part of the UI overhaul of Call of Duty. For months now, they have reportedly been looking into whether NFTs could be a worthwhile addition to the CoD franchise. Most major game companies have actively decided against NFTs from the start or, like EA, quickly backed away from them after initial enthusiasm. As recently as November, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had called NFTs the “future of the industry”. Then, at the beginning of 2022, he withdrew his forecast after a large part of the game developers as well as the gaming community had clearly positioned themselves against NFTs in games.

Activision also feared negative feedback from the community, as was already the case with Ubisoft and Team 17, for example. Valve even goes one step further with its gaming platform Steam and has banned all NFT games on it, which would then also affect Call of Duty in the future.

Possible applications

The goal of the planned UI overhaul is to personalise CoD accounts, what could be more obvious than NFTs. If the idea of NFTs really catches on in CoD, there would be many conceivable uses for making user accounts unique. Weapon skins, calling cards, emotes or operators would give players the opportunity to make their account stand out from the crowd.

Most of the comments on RalphsValve’s tweet are clearly against NFTs and given the already bubbling discussion within the CoD community and the general scepticism of players towards NFTs, it is quite conceivable that the idea has already been rejected by Activision.
