Last Friday, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was officially released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The now second remake of the title is enjoying a great deal of popularity. It is so huge that it is setting a record.

Even if many consider the shooter series to be worn out, Call of Duty has become an indispensable part of gaming. The latest part of the series, Modern Warfare II, strengthens this impression once again.

As Activision had hoped, the title is already achieving enormous sales figures and thus seems to be making up for the slight low from last year.

At least PlayStation is hinting at this tremendous success via social media. On (Twitter) the company declares the launch of MWII as the most successful release of the COD series and congratulates developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision on this huge success. Even though PlayStation does not provide any figures, there seems to be some truth to this achievement. Because the shooter already tops the bestseller lists on (Xbox) and PC (Steam).

However, PlayStation does not seem to be sharing this message entirely altruistically. Instead, this message could make it clear that Activision – and now Microsoft – are dependent on the sales figures of the PlayStation platform. After all, the company has been stoking concerns for some time now that Call of Duty could become an Xbox-exclusive brand.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer also calms nervous minds in an interview with The Verge. There he explains that there are no plans to take Call of Duty away from PlayStation. As long as there is a PlayStation to send Call of Duty to, they will continue to sell the brand on the Japanese console.
