The publisher of the upcoming third installment in the Subnautica series has revealed the release date and platforms and, thanks to a Youtuber, the first details
We don’t know whether it will really be called Subnautica 3, but the third installment of the popular underwater survival series has been in development for some time. News emerged during a financial report from the publisher
The wait is on…
When will Subnautica 3 be released? Unfortunately, anyone hoping to dive into the depths again soon should take a deep breath from their oxygen mask. Because according to a slide from the publisher presentation the first half of 2025 is currently considered the release period.
It should be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and possibly also for the Switch.
What we know about Subnautica 3
Although it will be over a year before we don our diving fins again, we can still draw a few vague outlines of what we can expect from the third installment.
A few weeks ago, we already told you what one of the developers said in an interview with a Subnautica Youtuber about the upcoming next part of the series. If you want to read all the details from that interview, check out the article above. But here are the most important points:
- Subnautica remains Subnautica: The new installment will stay true to its origins and will not fundamentally change the genre or the core gameplay. So anyone who fears that things will be wilder and more action-packed in the future can relax. According to all the latest statements, this is unlikely.
- Instead of the Unity engine, the Unreal Engine 5 will be used. This will result in a considerable leap in graphics, but the developers will also have to start from scratch for many things. For example, a completely new water tech will be used.
- Multiplayer was neither included nor excluded.
- Compared to the development of Subnautica, about twice as many people work at Unknown Worlds – mostly from home.
Subnautica: Below Zero partly takes a different path than the first part, which is still held up by many as the crowning achievement of its kind
Are you excited about the next installment in the Subnautica series? What new features would you like to see in the as yet unnamed underwater newcomer? Should it be set exclusively in the wet or would you like to see more mainland areas, similar to Below Zero? Let us know your views, opinions and wishes in the comments!
