After years of radio silence, a release of the Source 2 port of CS:GO finally seems imminent. Here’s everything you need to know about it
Update: 14.03.2023
Is Source 2 coming tomorrow? After Valve’s developer uploaded a major update with Source 2 data to the internal pre-release build on Steam, it might actually be coming soon
The pre-release build is unsurprisingly the last version before the official release. So the long wait for Source 2 in CS:GO could come to an end as early as today or tomorrow.

The time has finally come! After years of rumours and leaks, the release of Source 2 for CS:GO – or CS:GO 2 – seems imminent. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
The last time an Nvidia driver gave hope to the fans, now there were further reports, among others from industry insider Richard Lewis, who announced the release of Source 2 for this March.
Source 2 or “CS:GO 2”?
The first question CS:GO fans ask themselves is, of course, what exactly “CS:GO 2” actually is and what the game would include.
Whether the upcoming release is really a full-fledged successor or “only” a port to the Source 2 engine is not yet clear. Nevertheless, a jump to the new engine would definitely be a big enough step to represent an official “CS:GO 2” with it.
It won’t be new game, it won’t be Counter-Strike 2, it won’t even be a rebrand, just CS:GO Source 2
And your skins are fine, they will be available in new version.

The topic has been intensely discussed since 2014, when Source 2 was released and other Valve titles like Dota 2 switched to the engine. For example, parts of CS:GO are already on the Source 2 engine and there are reports that some maps such as Inferno have already been ported.
What new features are coming with Source 2?
Since Valve hasn’t made any official announcements yet, all information here is of course leaks and rumours that are unconfirmed.
According to the reports, however, there will finally be 128-tick servers, which have been requested by the community for years. Revised matchmaking, another long-awaited feature, is also said to be coming with Source 2 and could then make FACEIT or ESEA superfluous.

When is Source 2 coming?
Originally, the community had hoped for a Source 2 port in August 2022 – just in time for the 10th anniversary of CS:GO. Now, however, the indications are condensing to March 2023.
The port is said to be at such an advanced stage that a beta for “CS:GO 2” could start as early as March or by 1 April at the latest.
So fans should keep their eyes open. We will of course inform you as soon as there are any updates.
What will happen to the existing CS:GO skins?
Most leakers and insiders agree that there will not be a completely new game that would reset players’ inventories. Instead, like Dota 2 back in the day, there will probably be a major update that updates the game to the Source 2 engine, but transfers existing player accounts over without a hitch.
So you probably won’t have to worry about what happens to your precious skins.
