Portal RTX System Requirements – Who would have thought Portal would be the new Crysis?

The requirements for Portal RTX are so high that Nvidia recommends DLSS in every configuration. We tell you which hardware you need for which resolution.

You will be baked, and then there will be Cake, what GLaDOS once lied to you about while sending you through the test chambers now applies to your PC. Because the system requirements of the new edition of Valve’s classic will make your hardware sweat. Quite in contrast to the original, which runs even on a potato (okay, enough with the Portal puns).

The fact is: while Portal is very playable even on weaker systems, the new RTX version turns the tables. If you want to enjoy ray tracing, you should bring at least an RTX 3060 – at least.

But can it run Portal RTX?

The system requirements of Portal RTX set a new standard for high-end PC gaming, just like Crysis did back in the day. Crytek’s shooter was notoriously known for making even high-performance gaming PCs sweat. It will be very similar with Portal RTX, especially as an RTX 3080 is already recommended just to enjoy 60 FPS.

On the other hand, if you only have the very popular RTX 3060, you can only play the game in full HD at 30 frames per second. For a puzzler like Portal, this might be enough, although some sequences do require fast reactions, especially in the later parts of the game.

It should also be noted that both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 graphics cards only achieve these values with DLSS. With native resolution, the story would probably look quite different.

If you don’t want to make any compromises and want to play the game in 4K resolution with ultra settings and 60 FPS, you have to at least go for the RTX 4080. However, DLSS is also used here, but in the third version with Frame Generation.

The requirements apart from the graphics card are also quite high. As a processor, you need at least an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or an Intel Core i7-6700 for Full HD, and for 4K the requirements increase to a Ryzen 9 5900 or a Core i7-12700K. In addition, there is at least 16 GB of RAM for Full HD, 32 GB for 4K.

Unfortunately, Nvidia and Valve have not yet given any details on the 1440p resolution or which hardware is required for native resolution. In general, the system requirements still leave a few questions unanswered, for example the minimum requirements for AMD graphics cards.

You can see why the requirements are so high in the new trailer. The ray tracing effects are really very vivid.

Portal RTX will be released on 08 December 2022 for Steam, just in time for the 15th birthday of the original. Those who already own Portal will receive a free update.
