CS:GO has already been on the market for almost 10 years. Instead of a successor, however, we could be in for a complete overhaul. Current rumours point to Source 2.

For years there has been speculation whether the game engine of CS:GO will finally be revised. Dataminers recently found some traces that could point to an implementation of the Source 2 engine. Although rumours have been around for years, they now seem to be solidifying.

CS:GO anniversary as occasion

The 10th anniversary of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive could provide the first clue as to why there is currently more and more information about a potential switch to Source 2. After all, the title celebrates its anniversary in August and so could get the change.

A recent leak shows that this assumption could be correct. Journalist Arseny Kuzminsky is said to have leaked the switch to the Source 2 engine from a confirmed source. This news is currently going viral in the CS scene and gives players hope.

RTX, new names & more

Kuzminsky’s Twitter account @_koozya tweeted what new features we can expect. The longed-for switch to Source 2 should thus take place very soon:

But of course, the new engine isn’t the only reason to rejoice. Valve is apparently planning to simply rename CS:GO to Counter-Strike and rebrand the game. The name change could indicate that from now on there will only be one CS, which will always be updated.

The in-game names are also to be adapted. There will no longer be terrorists and counter-terrorists. Instead, they will simply be called T & CT in the future. The term ‘bomb’ could also be dropped in order to become more sponsor-friendly.

For content creators, RTX may also become interesting. This feature is possible with the Source 2 engine and can thus also be used in the Counter-Strike rework. Although professional players will largely do without this graphic function, content creators will have better visual material for videos.
