The DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 called Phantom Liberty is just around the corner. Nvidia is preparing for the release with a new driver that provides DLSS-3.5 support, among other things.

After a long wait, yesterday afternoon was the day: With the update 2.0, developer studio CD Projekt Red sets the course for the Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk 2077.

In order to enjoy Phantom Liberty properly, however, an update of the Nvidia graphics drivers is due – after all, DLSS 3.5 including Ray Reconstruction are one of the core features with which the add-on advertises itself.

Why the focus on Nvidia? The answer to this lies in the partnership that the graphics card manufacturer entered into with CD Projekt Red in the course of developing Cyberpunk 2077. So, according to the cooperation, the focus is on the RTX graphics cards, which can have more technical features for the game.

Phantom Liberty: Game Ready Driver 537.42 for the Overdrive mode

Nvidia has now made this update available for download with the Game Ready Driver in version 537.42.

Main driver of the update is said to be DLSS 3.5, which will mainly benefit the new Overdrive mode mentioned graphics setting of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

The core of the new DLSS version is the feature called Ray Reconstruction again. Nvidia promises an improved quality and clarity of reflections in the (related blog entry) furthermore, the global illumination is supposed to be even more precise and dynamic.

This is supposed to be achieved with the help of an AI model, which can perform more precise calculations than the manual denoisers used so far. Nvidia presents the result in the video:

In order to get the most out of DLSS 3.5, Nvidia obviously wants a current RTX-40 graphics card installed in your computer. Only these are compatible with the Frame Generation feature at the moment – after all, DLSS 3.5 is also available for older graphics cards.

In return, Nvidia also promises a lot of improved performance, which you can get out of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty with your RTX-40 GPU.

In the probably most commonly used Full HD resolution, DLSS 3.5 should be able to deliver about three times the frame rate on average.

This is especially worthwhile for the nominal entry-level and mid-range Nvidia graphics cards, since the RTX 4060 as well as the Ti version will exceed the important 60 FPS limit for playing Phantom Liberty smoothly.

Nvidia also promises the same performance boost in the 1440p resolution, which is becoming increasingly popular. Here, the RTX 4070 is listed as the smallest recommended graphics card, which is supposed to get to a good 70 frames per second through DLSS 3.5.

On the other hand, those who want to play Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty in Ultra HD resolution will have to chunk and not spill: The display in 3,840 x 2,160 pixels regularly forces even the flagship GPU in the form of the Geforce RTX 4090 to its knees. The AI upscaling is supposed to remedy this and get about five times more frames per second out of it, so that smooth 100 FPS are recorded here according to Nvidia.

It remains to be seen whether these benchmark comparisons are really useful for Nvidia. After all, the manufacturer’s new promotional materials recently sparked a discussion in the gaming community, which does not like the promises, not least because of the high GPU prices.

Now it’s your turn: Are you looking forward to the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty? Do you have an RTX 40 graphics card installed and will be able to benefit from DLSS 3.5 or are the GPUs too expensive for you? Let us know in the comments!
