Free DLCs, big story expansions and multiplayer: we clarify what’s next for Cyberpunk 2077 after release and when new content is coming.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets DLCs.

-There should be at least as many DLCs as for The Witcher 3.

-Some content will be free, some will cost money.

-The developers stress that the story of the main game is finished.

-First free DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077 will be released in 2021, with paid addons to follow later.

-Free Witcher goodies are already unlockable at release.

It is currently unknown if and in which form the planned multiplayer will be released.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be supplied with content after release – and the first small DLCs have already appeared. The makers are adopting the business model from The Witcher 3 – there will be a mix of free DLCs and larger paid add-ons. First of all, there will probably be further patches to eliminate technical problems, such as the current update 1.3.

We are collecting all the info on the planned expansions and will regularly supplement this article with new info on release dates and upcoming content.

Roadmap: This content is coming for Cyberpunk

The free DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077

These DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077 have already been released:

– Alternative look for Johnny Silverhand (Update 1.3)
– V’s new jackets (Update 1.3)
– Archer Quartz “Bandit” (Update 1.3)

How to activate the DLCs: In the game menu you will find the sub-item “Additional Content”. Click on it and you will see all available add-ons along with a short description. It also says where exactly you can find the new items.

The Witcher 3 as a role model: Head of development Adam Kicinski already confirmed in April 2020 that Cyberpunk 2077 should get “at least as many DLCs” as The Witcher 3. The role-playing game about the witcher Geralt received a total of 16 small content updates within the release year, such as new armour, weapons, cosmetic items, new quests, Gwent card sets, finishing moves or a New Game Plus mode.

More DLCs allegedly surfaced, CDPR denies

As is so often the case, a rumour started on Reddit: A dataminer claims to have found out the titles of the free DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077 via the Epic Store. This is unconfirmed information that you should consider with appropriate caution. However, he provided (now deleted) screenshots as evidence and what he writes doesn’t sound far-fetched at first.

This is what the free expansions are supposed to be called:

– Ripperdocs Expansion

– Body Shops Expansion

– Fashion Forward Expansion

– Gangs of Night City

– Body of Chrome

– Rides of the Dark Future

– The Relic

– Neck Deep

– Night City Expansion

Another untitled DLC

According to the leaker, there are also placeholders for three paid DLCs, but without names yet. A release date or a price list was also not included.

CD Projekt Red has commented on the alleged leak: To IGN they revealed that the titles would not be the names of the planned DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077. However, there is no further info on this. It could well be that the potential titles for the upcoming expansions were simply not final or that they are code names or placeholder names.

The story addons for Cyberpunk 2077

Big Story Expansions Planned: In addition to the small free DLCs, new single-player content for Cyberpunk 2077 has already been announced in the form of “real” addons. The Witcher 3 is also the model here: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, two full-fledged expansions with their own storylines, quests and NPCs, were released for the Witcher adventure, which can be purchased individually or as an Expansion Pass.

On par with the main game, Blood and Wine offered 30 hours of additional gameplay and a new exciting storyline.
On par with the main game, Blood and Wine offered 30 hours of additional gameplay and a new exciting storyline.

Cyberpunk players can therefore expect paid DLCs on a similar scale. However, the developers emphasise that the story of the main game is complete and that they are “not artificially holding back content for DLCs”. So the addons do not fill critical cliffhanger gaps, but are additional, optional stories – according to CD Projekt RED’s Alvin Liu.

Timetable: When will the DLCs be released?

In several statements, CD Projekt Red has addressed the criticism of the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and has set itself the goal of improving the game. Afterwards, they want to dedicate themselves to the free DLCs – the first three appeared in August 2021 with update 1.3. Presumably, the next ones will follow in patch 1.4.

The free next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is also still coming, planned for the second half of 2021. The larger content expansions will therefore no longer appear in 2021, but will probably be postponed to 2022. The serious hacker attack on CD Projekt could cause further delays:

Season Pass for Cyberpunk 2077?

Concrete information later: According to CD Projekt, there should also be a Season Pass for Cyberpunk 2077. Presumably it is similar to the Expansion Pass of The Witcher 3 and contains the more extensive DLCs that will be released after the launch. Originally, it was planned to introduce the Season Pass before the launch, but the developers have changed their minds.

Instead, there is no concrete information on the price or release date so far. We will probably have to be patient until the expansions are officially announced. As things stand, that could certainly take until 2022, given the focus on improving the game. This is also evident from the official roadmap of CD Projekt.

What about multiplayer?

Originally, Cyberpunk 2077 was promised not only free DLCs and add-ons, but also multiplayer, unlike The Witcher 3. Similar to the DLCs and expansions, however, you should expect major delays for this as well.

The plans for a standalone release have apparently been cancelled in the meantime, and it is not yet known what the multiplayer component will look like instead. There should be nothing new here before 2022 either, considering the current roadmap of the developers.

When is the multiplayer coming?

Multiplayer still needs a long time: The developers have already officially confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a multiplayer part. However, it is clearly secondary to the single-player part and must also take a back seat to patches and DLCs.

So far it is unclear whether the online part will somehow appear in the form of an expansion – and whether (or how much) it will cost. However, it is an independent project for which, in contrast to the main game, there will probably also be microtransactions – more on this below.

Singleplayer campaign has priority: Otherwise, it is certain that they want to focus exclusively on the campaign for the time being. A tweet said: “As soon as we’re done with Cyberpunk 2077, the free DLCs and the additional single player content, we’ll invite you to some multiplayer action. ”

This info complements a statement made by Adam Kincinski in November 2020: After the launch debacle of Cyberpunk 2077, it was revealed during an investor conference that CD Projekt Red is focusing on improving the main game for the time being.

Accordingly, the development of the multiplayer mode is currently not the focus of the developers and will be prioritised downwards. The roadmap linked above confirms this once again and even pushes the DLCs further back in favour of the patches, which should also push the multiplayer further back.

Microtransactions confirmed in multiplayer

Microtransactions should make players “happy “: Adam Kicinski confirmed in a Quarterly Report that there will be paid content in multiplayer. However, these are “not meant to be aggressive”. Instead, players should be happy to spend their money:

“[…] You can expect there to be great things to buy. The goal is to design monetisation so that people are happy to spend money. I’m not trying to be cynical or hide anything; it’s about creating a sense of value. That goes for microtransactions as well: You can expect them, of course, and [Cyberpunk 2077] is a good setting to sell things, but it won’t be aggressive. It won’t annoy players, it will make them happy – at least that’s our goal.”

Exactly what microtransactions will look like in Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer is not yet known. It is not clear from Kicinski’s statements whether only cosmetic or also game-relevant content will be offered for real money.
