On Twitter, the official Diablo account reveals a family tree of celestial and hellish beings that clarifies much of the lore.
Diablo 4 will be released in June 2023 and in the trailer for the release date big names meet: Lilith and Inarius face each other with their armies and prepare for battle. But who are these two anyway and where do they come from? The celestial and infernal relationship of the two is now clearly shown in a family tree that Blizzard published on Twitter.
Family tree shows some of the most powerful creatures in lore.
There is no longer an explanation of the individual names on the family tree, but we can give you one. Here is a list of who is behind the names we have mentioned:
Lilith, Inarius and Rathma
As a great, though not only villainess is supposed to appear in Diablo 4 probably Lilith, who fights the angel Inarius in the trailer above. We therefore want to list these two first:
- Lilith is the daughter of the demon lord Mephisto. Unlike him, she eventually grew tired of the eternal conflict between the heavens and hell, and believed there was a way to end it in her favour. She manipulated the angel Inarius and got him to steal the Worldstone. The two created Sanctuary, from their union and the angels and demons that followed them came the Nephalem and later humanity.
- Inarius was a subordinate of the archangel Tyrael. With his escape to Sanctuary, he was content, while Lilith wanted to use the Nephalem to her advantage. When it was discussed whether the powerful Nephalem should rather be wiped out because they were more powerful than their ancestors, Lilith killed most of the angels who had followed Inarius. The latter then banished her to the Void. Later, after a battle, he was delivered to Hell and tortured there for a long time.
- Rathma is the son of Lilith and Inarius and the first Nephalem. He opposes his parents” goals and sabotages their plans, believing that balance must always be maintained. He taught the first necromancer.
The First Beings
- Anu is said to be the first being that ever existed and united all the traits of now existing things in himself. When he separated all bad and evil from himself, the seven-headed dragon Tathamet emerged from it. The two fought until they destroyed each other, creating the universe. From his spine came the angels and from his eye the world stone.
- Tathamet is a seven-headed dragon, originated from the bad qualities of Anu and died in battle with him. From his heads arose the seven evils, each commanding a domain of hell, which arose from his body.
The Seven Evils
- Main Evils, the three brothers. The three of them ruled over Hell, which had long been engaged in an uninterrupted war against Heaven. To corrupt the people of Sanctuary, they founded the cult of the Trinity.
- Mephisto, Lord of Hatred: The eldest of the three brothers and father of Lilith and Lucion. Although he is the weakest of the brothers, he is also the most intelligent and cunning.
- Baal, Lord of Destruction: The middle of the brothers is only interested in complete destruction and was indirectly responsible for the destruction of the Worldstone.
- Diablo, Lord of Terror: The youngest brother enjoys sowing fear in people”s hearts and is considered the most dangerous prince of hell. Of course, the games were also named after him.
- Lower Evils: They are weaker than the three brothers and were kept down by them for a long time until they allied against the three and defeated them in a great war.
- Andariel, Maiden of Torment: She helped the lesser evils in their plans but later sided with Diablo. She inflicted mental anguish on her victims, unlike Duriel.
- Duriel, Lord of Pain: The twin brother of Andariel also wanted to secure Diablo”s favour. He likes to inflict physical pain on his victims and loves the sound of their screams. He seems to be returning as an enemy in Diablo 4.
- Belial, Lord of Lies: He is a master manipulator and is said to have persuaded Azmodan to revolt against the three brothers. He himself prefers to remain hidden in the shadows rather than lead armies himself, and spins intricate plots.
- Azmodan, Lord of Sin: He wanted to be sole ruler of hell and was dissatisfied with his place.
The Angels
The five (formerly seven) archangels are said to embody the most important qualities of Anu: wisdom, justice, honour, hope and destiny. They ruled the heavens as Angiri”s council.
- Tyrael, Aspect of Wisdom and Justice: Formerly the archangel of justice, Tyrael stood up for humanity. In the end, he even tore off his wings and became mortal. One of his allies in the fight against his brother Malthael also plays a role in Diablo 4!
- Auriel, Archangel of Hope: She fills the hearts of all with confidence and is the most popular of all angels. In Diablo 3, she is captured by Diablo but freed by the players.
- Imperius, Archangel of Honour: He is a great warrior, but also proud and rash. While he used to have a good relationship with Tyrael, he no longer understands his passion for humanity.
- Malthael: The former Archangel of Wisdom disappeared from heaven after the destruction of the Worldstone and became the Angel of Death. In Diablo 3 we have to face him in Reaper of Souls and defeat him.
- Itherael, Archangel of Destiny: He carries a powerful scroll and can (more or less) see into the future. However, he tends to see the many directions in which an event can develop.
