The career mode gets a few revisions for the release of FIFA 22. Among them very exciting features, but the focus is mainly on player careers.
FIFA 22, like its predecessors, offers a pretty bulging football package. There are now so many modes in the game that most people will probably choose one of them and leave the rest to the left. Above all, the career mode continues to enjoy great popularity among players who are not very interested in competitive online modes.
That’s why this mode gets a few adjustments every year. They are not always huge, but the mode is not completely idle either. You can find out here what will change this year. And also what is not quite as new as EA claims.
The coaching career
The coaching career in FIFA is traditionally almost more like a classic manager mode. Here we don’t just play, we manage a whole team. So we have to set up training sessions on the side and, above all, use transfers to put together a team that we think can win the championship.
Create a Team
There are no changes to the game mechanics of the coaching career this year. So in essence, hardly anything is being changed. But there is still a slightly bigger innovation. With FIFA 22 we can build our own team before starting our career as a coach. It works like this:
Set a name: At the beginning it’s simple. You are free to decide what you want your team to be called, and you can also choose a short version of the name and a two- or three-letter abbreviation. You can also choose a nickname, which the commentators will then use in the game.
Replace a team: After that, you decide which team you want to replace in the league. You can start in the Bundesliga and then simply replace RB Leipzig with JVG Kleinköster Nord. In the end, you decide which other team should be your rival.
Your jerseys: The next thing is the look. Here you have to decide which jerseys your team will wear. You decide on the colour and pattern for the home and away kits. You can also design the club crest.
Build a stadium: You choose a stadium and customise it. However, this is not nearly as extensive as in Pro Clubs or FUT mode. You can only adjust the colour of the seats, change the turf pattern or the goal nets. At least you can use the atmosphere to determine which fan chants are played and to which song your team enters the pitch.
Your team: You determine the overall rating of your team. That is, between one and five stars. You also decide on the average age of the players, the transfer budget and which areas the board attaches great importance to. For example, whether they value regional or continental success more. Depending on the decisions you make, the squad will consist of different players at the beginning. You will probably not be able to put the team together completely by yourself.
Is this completely new?
This feature is advertised by EA as brand new, but that is only half the truth. It was already possible in earlier FIFA games to start a career with your own team. At that time there was still the Creation Centre. The only difference was that the team was created in the browser and then imported. In addition, players had to buy a Career Pack individually in order to actually be able to use the team in this mode. This feature was removed after the switch to the Frostbite engine.
All the customisation options are also only new on paper. After all, in Pro Club mode it has long been possible to create your own team with your own jerseys and so on.
The Player Career
There are significantly more changes this year in the player career. In this mode you create your own professional and start your career at a club of your choice. Away from the games, you improve your own skills and talk to other clubs.
Substitutions: As a young talent, you may now be substituted during a match. In the past, you were either in from the start or not at all.
New Match Goals: Depending on their position, custom players have dynamic goals for each match. The form of the whole team and the formation also influence these goals. We can force one of these goals. Then when we fulfil it we get more points to improve our pro.
Coach Rating: Fulfilled goals also increase the opinion of your coach. As your career progresses, improve your standing with the coach to make the leap from the bench to the starting eleven
Dressing room sequences: These new cinematics are more of an atmospheric feature. After a match, we see how the players behave in the locker room. The mood depends on the course of the game. So we see our own pro interacting a bit more interpersonally with colleagues.
Player Growth: After a match, our player earns experience points. Training sessions also give experience. With the points we unlock skills in a skill tree and thus improve our abilities. In the past, values were increased passively through training. In each skill tree, there are unlockable archetypes that offer the greatest bonus.
New perk system: Players will now gradually unlock perks. A total of three of these can be equipped at the same time. Perks provide specific buffs like ball control and can also improve teammates.

Is this completely new?
Players’ careers will certainly feel significantly different this year than in previous years. But you shouldn’t expect a complete upheaval either. Most of the changes were very necessary and did not exist before in the career mode. The player development with the skill trees already existed in this form in Pro Clubs. In the end, the feature was expanded somewhat and transferred here.
