Umut Gültekin and Anders Vejrgang bring victory to Germany, beating 23 other 2s teams from around the world!
In a thrilling final, German FIFA professional Umut Gültekin and his Danish colleague Anders Vejrgang prevailed over England’s Jacob Benskin and Ethan Higgins from Team FUTWIZ Europe.
FIFA is organising three world championships in FIFA 23, each with a prize pool of around one million euros.
In the so-called FIFAe Club World Cup, 24 clubs competed against each other in 2v2. Among them was the German club RB Leipzig with Umut Gültekin and Anders Vejrgang. The two have already won the VBL Club Championship this year. RB Leizpig also won the DFB ePOKAL with Umut and Gaucho and Umut is even the reigning FIFAe World Champion in singles. However, Umut is not qualified for this year’s individual FIFAe World Cup, which will take place from 16 July. But there could still be a German world champion, BerkayLion from FC St. Pauli and Jonny from SC Paderborn will be competing for the FIFA 23 throne this year.
The Road to the World Cup
RB Leipzig already started well in the event on Thursday. They advanced to the round of 16 as group winners and won against Team Hollywood from Australia.
In the quarter-finals, however, the two shooting stars stumbled against Brøndby eSport and lost 0 to 2 in the first leg. However, they staged a monster comeback in the second leg, winning 5 to 1.
In the semi-finals, they managed to get through against TG-NIP, with a strong 4 to 0 in the first leg and a solid 1 to 1 in the second leg. In the process, anders managed to stand out time and again throughout the competition, despite having the reigning world champion on his side.
A deserved victory
Even the first goal of the final was scored by RB Leipzig, England’s rivals managed to follow suit, but Umut Gültekin and Anders Vejrgang emerged victorious in the first game, 2 to 1.
In match number two, the Leipzigers were again ahead and kept their opponents at bay for a long time. Team FUTWIZ Europe managed to equalise at 1 to 1 shortly before the end, but the overall victory still belonged to RB Leipzig and was well deserved.
