In Starcraft 2, there is a mission that players have repeatedly failed at until now. A YouTuber has now found a way to at least not lose.
In 2010, Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty was released. And although 14 years have passed since then, the game is still as popular as ever. In April 2024, the game only just missed out on making the top 10 of our list of the 150 best strategy games.
Developer Blizzard deliberately built a mission into the game that players regularly failed at – until now.Because recently, a fan managed to successfully complete this impossible mission.Or rather, to survive it.
YouTuber solves the seemingly impossible in 40 minutes
Specifically, it’s about the Utter Darkness mission. This is the final mission of the Zeratul campaign in Wings of Liberty. In it, players take control of an army of Protoss defending their base.
The camp is attacked by hordes of Zerg, which will inevitably overrun the Protoss base at some point during the mission. This is exactly what the YouTuber Davey Gunface wanted to prevent and has developed a plan to destroy the Zerg. You can find the video here:
In the nearly 40-minute video, the YouTuber explains step by step how he proceeded. Basically, it’s about cleverly manipulating the AI and getting it to take certain paths. This way, the enemy units are in an unprotected position.
Shield of Aiur is the key
The key to success therefore lies in the arrival of the last wave of allied units. This is where Artanis arrives with the Shield of Aiur. Davey Gunface then combines two abilities of this mothership:
- Vortex: Pulls nearby units into a black hole.
- Mass recall:; can recall units to the mothership’s position.
With this combination, the YouTuber places around 24 Templars in a small column on the side of a cliff.
There they are out of reach of the opponent. These Templars can transform into Archons and stop the waves of flying units that would normally be fatal to the Protoss army.
Once the air units have been destroyed and the opponent only has troops on the ground, it comes to a standstill. This is because the AI is no longer able to reach the Protoss entrenched in the rift. In addition, no new Zerg units are produced to avoid lags.
You can take it to the extreme by wiping out all enemies except the Overseers with cloaked units. The Overseers then retreat to the edge of the map – according to Davey Gunface a “very realistic victory condition”.
Nevertheless, there is no victory screen for this – especially since the Protoss have survived, but are doomed to live out their existence on an inaccessible cliff in the future.
