On the PlayStation 4, Until Dawn once set standards in the horror genre. Now the cinematic horror spectacle returns with the power of Unreal Engine 5

At the Sony State of Play on January 31, 2024, numerous new games were unveiled. One of them is a new edition of the horror hit Until Dawn from 2015.

If the name means nothing to you as a PC-only gamer: No wonder, because the original was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 at the time. However, the remaster will also be released for home computers in addition to the PS5.

The remaster is being developed by Ballistic Moon. The release is scheduled for 2024.

“Improvements in all areas “

Sony talks in a blog entry about giving the horror game more emotional depth, an improved look and a completely new soundscape . The new soundtrack was penned by Canadian composer Mark Korven, who created the music for the film Cube, among others.

The improved look is to be achieved through the use of Unreal Engine 5 – the predecessor still had an older version of the Decima engine (Horizon series, Death Stranding) under the hood. New animations and reworked characters, environments and effects are cited as improvements.

The story is to be told in a more nuanced and emotional way thanks to a changed color palette and new camera angles. According to Sony there will also be a new third-person camera so that you can see completely new places – which is strange, as the gameplay in Until Dawn was also in the third-person view in the original, with a few exceptions.

What’s Until Dawn about?

In Until Dawn you experience a classic teen slasher story. In other words, a couple of young people disappear into an old cabin in the middle of the woods to suddenly experience a bloody horror trip

What at first sounds like a run-of-the-mill plot full of clichés turns out to be according to the test of our sister magazine GamePro at the time a nerve-wracking horror adventurethat uses elements familiar from films in such a creative way that it really surprised us

In terms of gameplay, you can’t expect a complex game. Like Life is Strange, Until Dawn is more of an interactive movie in which you have to press a few buttons from time to time. You open doors, investigate clues and here and there the characters bite the dust, depending on how you proceed in the game.

Yes, you read that right: The characters can permanently dieif you make the wrong decisions.

If this all sounds far too stressful for you, perhaps the Until Dawn movie could be something for you, which Sony says will also be announced soon.

Did you play Until Dawn on the PlayStation 4 back in the day? If yes, how did you like the horror spectacle? If not, were you too scared or did other aspects of the game put you off? As a PC gamer, are you interested in the announced UE5 remaster? Let us know what you think in the comments!
