After the first part of Quake already got a makeover, now it’s the legendary sequel’s turn with a remaster.
After the remaster frustration has reached a new peak at the latest since the disastrous GTA trilogy, it is all the more pleasing when there are also positive examples of remakes every now and then. One of them is the recently released remaster of the legendary first-person shooter Quake 2.

In addition to the main game including online and offline multiplayer, crossplay as well as polished graphics up to 4K, the Quake 2 remaster includes the two well-known DLCs The Reckoning and Ground Zero, which expand the game with 33 missions and 21 multiplayer maps.
You’ll also get the brand new free DLC Call of the Machine, which adds another 33 campaign missions and a multiplayer map. Fittingly, the expansion was developed by MachineGames, who you may be familiar with from the new Wolfenstein games.
While other manufacturers have to take a lot of criticism for their pricing policy, the Quake 2 Remaster comes along very favourably in comparison with its cost of 10 euros for all current platforms and consoles. Those who have already bought the original on Steam will even get the remaster upgrade completely free of charge.
There is nevertheless one, albeit small, restriction. The Quake II RTX mod, which mainly adds ray-tracing, is not compatible with the remaster at the moment. Whether compatibility will be established in the foreseeable future remains to be seen.
What is Quake 2?
If Quake 2 doesn’t mean anything to you, here’s a short summary: In the first-person shooter by id Software, released in 1997, you take on the role of a soldier and explore dark space bases. There you fight the Stroggs, a vicious alien species that threatens the existence of all mankind. An important feature is the co-op and PvP mode, where you can play together with your friends.
