The service will disappear from Amazon’s program in the next few weeks.
Amazon will discontinue one of its streaming services. Freevee, which launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive, offered a free alternative to Netflix and Co. and supported its program with advertising.
In the coming weeks, Freevee will gradually disappear, writes Deadline
Why this matters: This means that streaming fans will have one less service to choose from in the future. However, there is no need to shed any tears, as the content has already been migrated from Freevee to Prime Video.
The ax comes as no surprise. Back in February, Amazon was already thinking out loud about discontinuing Freevee in the medium term (adweek).
An Amazon spokesperson told Deadline the following:
In order to provide customers with a simpler viewing experience, we have decided to phase out the Freevee branding The content available to Prime members will not change. Non-Prime members will continue to have access to a wide range of free streaming content.
Why is Amazon doing this? This is probably mainly due to the introduction of advertising on Prime Video in January of this year. Freevee was once characterized by the fact that you had to use the service for free but watch ads. This unique selling point was eventually undermined.
What is happening to Freevee’s original content?Over the years, the provider has produced its own series and shows, all of which remain available on Prime Video and may be continued there by Amazon. These include titles such as:
- Bosch: Legacy
- Classified
- 7 vs. Wild
- Neighbours
- Boat Story
It is currently unclear exactly when Freevee will finally be shut down. According to Deadline, Freevee is to disappear worldwide in the next few weeks.
Freevee is being scrapped by Amazon due to its similarity to Prime Video. Have you used the provider? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
