Age of Empires 4

The first update 7989 for Age of Empires 4 is here. On board are the first bug fixes and a balance change. We have all the information for you.

After a long development period, Age of Empires 4 has finally been available since the end of October and knows how to hold its own. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement, especially on the technical front. With a first patch, developer Relic is now tackling a few of these problems.

The update 7989 for Age of Empires 4 is primarily dedicated to some technical shortcomings and also makes a first balance change. We tell you what will change with the update and how your saved replays will fare.

Age of Empires 4: This changes with update 7989

To dampen any possible anticipation a little: there are no page-long patch notes with this update yet. Instead, the developers are focusing on five specific changes:

  • Performance: There should now be less FPS drops when panning the camera across the map
  • Lifebars: The lifebars should now be permanently displayed and no longer disappear if you have activated the option
  • Mongols: The village centre of the Mongols can no longer be placed directly next to an enemy village centre. Instead, it must now be in a revealed area and more than 20 hexes away from an enemy village centre.
  • Steam: Players on Steam can now connect their account to their Xbox Live account
  • Small improvements in translationsWhen will the patch be available? Update 7989 has been available for download since November 15 at 6:00pm via both Steam and the Xbox app.

    How big is the download
? Despite the few changes, the update in the Xbox app is 9.62 gigabytes. On Steam, on the other hand, you only have to download 367 MB (thanks to community member Dingenskirchen for the information).

Savings and replays: What you need to know

Those who save a lot of replays of their matches should arm themselves before downloading the update. According to Relic Entertainment, you will no longer be able to use replays of your previous matches after the update. Those who want to save some particularly exciting matches should save them separately using external recording tools such as OBS.

However, there should be no restrictions on save games from matches in progress. The team has taken additional steps to ensure that your game saves are not affected by this particular update. However, it is apparently impossible to completely rule out the possibility that incompatible saves could occur.
