Agent Mysterious Rockstar Game

The GTA developer Rockstar Games announced Agent 14 years ago. Now the mysterious game finally disappears into oblivion.

Do you still remember Agent? The developer of games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption had officially unveiled the mysterious title barely 14 years ago. After that, it quickly became very quiet about the Rockstar project and no one really believed that anything would come of it.

Now Rockstar has finally removed the game from its own website – which means that Agent is finally and officially dead. We provide you with all the information about Agent and what little information there was about the long-missing game.

What kind of game should agent become?

Rockstar’s agent thriller: The details about Agent can be counted on the hand. All that is known is that the Cold War game was to take place during the 1970s. The plot would have revolved around espionage, secret services and political assassinations.

Agent would have been a classic single-player game, which was planned exclusively for PS3 and would have highlighted numerous locations all over the world – such as the Egyptian capital Cairo.

The manageable visuals: In 2015, an artist involved in the project and former Rockstar employee named Darren Charles Hatton published screenshots and 3D designs that he said were created for Agent. They show a quite detailed city in a mountainous region:

Was there any hope at all?

Agent was first teased by Rockstar Games in 2007 The first sign of life of the game is thus even older than Red Dead Redemption, which was released in 2010. The official announcement then followed in 2009: During a Sony press conference, Agent was revealed exclusively for Playstation 3.

Years of put-offs and radio silence: But after that it quickly became quiet again about Agent. Further details, a trailer or simply screenshots were awaited in vain. Fans had to be satisfied with a teaser website, a logo and the info that Agent was coming soon.

For years, Rockstar assured fans that Agent would be in active development. Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser even talked about Agent being a game the studio had wanted to make for years (via Gamespot).

Then screenshots of Agent first leaked out in 2011 (via VG247), until in 2013, when the Playstation 4 was unveiled, people asked about Agent but there was no real answer (via Gematsu). However, after further droughts of news, Agent was considered to be discontinued or at least on hold since 2017 at the latest.

No chance since 2018 at the latest: In 2018, the last shred of hope was extinguished when Rockstar Games simply let the trademark protection on Agent expire – previously, it was renewed every few years. Thus it was certain that neither developer Rockstar Games nor publisher Take-Two would do anything with the Agent brand.

However, the Agent website was still available. And it continued to promise that the game would come soon – at least until now. Twitter user CyberBlacks pointed out that Agent is no longer to be found among the games listed by Rockstar and that the website itself is no longer accessible. This means that Agent is now officially and definitively history.

Why was agent hired?

The great mystery: Rockstar has never officially announced concrete reasons why Agent was discontinued or never developed further. All we know is that Rockstar North was originally responsible for the development of Agent. However, for the release of the Playstation 3, numerous developers of Agent switched to the development of GTA 5 and later GTA Online. So we can only speculate about the reasons for Agent’s discontinuation – perhaps the mystery will never be solved.
