The vampire shooter Redfall was supposed to be a big hit for Arkane Studios and Xbox. Flashy action, vampires and cultists to defeat in co-op in a thrilling story and gritty small town. But apparently the spark didn”t go over with all players. Weak scores on all international rating sites caused a small debacle. What is the reason for this?

Redfall disappointed

The initial reviews for the release of Arkane Studios” vampire shooter are scathing. The Xbox exclusivity and a slow launch to only 30 Fps have already been controversially discussed. Now it turns out that Redfall”s gameplay doesn”t live up to the high expectations either. In addition, the poor performance could not be corrected until the launch.

On Metacritic, the game currently only averages 62 points for the PC version and 64 points for the Xbox version. Player feedback, as is so often the case, is even more drastic: The PC version only receives a user rating of 28 percent on Steam so far. A disaster for a triple-A, which is guaranteed to affect Redfall”s sales. A sad result for a studio that has always been able to earn good to very good ratings with games like Dishonored, Prey or Deathloop.

When it comes to the gameplay of the vampire shooter Redfall, opinions differ

While many players and critics agree that the story staging is outdated, some also praise the gameplay. The game”s strengths come out especially in cooperative mode, as many systems and the flow of the game are designed for playing together with at least one other person. The four characters can use synergies in battle to positively influence the gameplay and hunt vampires even stronger and cooler.

Exploring and discovering secrets in the small, monster-trying town is also one of the title”s few strengths. But then it too often splashes around uninspired in the usual open-world occupations. Thus, the game also lacks a scaling of the difficulty level with the number of players, which continues to tarnish the overall result.

Redfall is a vampire shooter that feels like a tried and true game concept in desperate need of an update. The game follows a familiar open-world formula that has been used in many other titles. Thus, it doesn”t do anything new, doesn”t have any innovations and can”t keep existing, well-known and established genre standards. Whether Arkane Studios can still turn things around and improve the game with updates and patches is very hard to say. However, this would certainly be desirable. After all, the setting of the vampire shooter is always right.
