You think the Middle Ages and modernity don’t go together? Hold my automatic grenade launcher and my warhorse for a moment

Haven’t we all wondered who would win in a fight between 100 knights and a modern soldier with a machine gun and grenade launcher? Soon we will finally be able to answer these and similarly profound questions thanks to the new sandbox game Kingmakers.

This is what it’s all about

The plot of Kingmakers is quickly told and should in no way be associated with the word “realism”. So if films like Braveheart or Gladiator weren’t authentic and historically accurate enough for you, you should definitely steer clear of Kingmakers.

The apocalypse has turned the world into a field of rubble and is forcing mankind to take drastic action. As members of an elite unit, we are sent 500 years into the past to change the course of history and avert doom.

We can choose between England, Scotland or Wales as our destinations, which, in combination with our individual decisions, can change the chronology to such an extent that this can ultimately even lead to different endings.

Since the nameless protagonist doesn’t give a damn about all the usual rules of time travel, he has brought along an arsenal of weapons that will make even hard-boiled action heroes green with envy.

In addition to the real-time battles with thousands of NPCs, there are also strategy elements in which we have to ensure that our kingdom continues to develop in addition to deploying our troops in battle. The construction of new buildings is the main focus here and is intended to give the shooter more depth of play.

If you want to make the Middle Ages unsafe in company, you can do so with up to four players in the integrated co-op mode, which should be available at release.

Sword vs. Shotgun

The unequal battle between sword and shotgun, tank and Pavese or machine gun and morning star leaves little to be desired as far as the arsenal of weapons is concerned.

In a short excerpt from the first trailer, alongside all kinds of firearms and grenade launchers, you can even see modern vehicles such as a combat helicopter or a tank cleaning up the battlefields of Great Britain.

These tanks and helicopters are also particularly effective at reducing the beautifully decorated half-timbered houses, farmhouses and castle towers of medieval towns to rubble.

In general, Kingmakers looks fantastic and is a graphical treat that has a lot to offer thanks to the Unreal Engine. In order not to lose track of the chaotic battlefield, we can switch from the third-person view to the top-down view at any time, in which we can also place buildings and determine troop formations

When Kingmakers will be released is unfortunately still unclear, onSteamonly 2024 is given as the time frame. What is certain, however, is that developer Redemption Road Games seems to have found a niche that no other studio has yet filled.
