Assassin’s Creed Mirage wants to go back to old series parts in every respect. This also applies to the colour scheme.
Diverse medieval series and films teach us that 1,000 years ago there simply weren’t as many colours as there are today. Everything was browner, greyer, pond greener – and according to American scientists, real sunshine was only invented in the 18th century!
No wonder a historically accurate work like Assassin’s Creed 1 took this into account back in 2007. The kingdom around Damascus and Jerusalem looked very desaturated with a rather dominant grey-blue colour cast, especially in comparison to later parts of the series. And that’s exactly what the brand new Assassin’s Creed Mirage wants to bring back. At least optionally:
We are excited to announce that Assassin’s Creed Mirage will include as an option a nostalgic visual filter inspired by the desaturated blue/gray colour palette from the first AC game. AssassinsCreed pic.twitter.com/DZkzv9uaEb

So if you’re thinking to yourself while playing Boah, not up for a lot of colours at all, you can always dim the sun in the options and use the blue-grey filter to direct it more towards the first part of the series. With Baghdad and the Middle Eastern scenario, Assassin’s Creed Mirage wants to go back to its roots anyway. Main character Basim runs, jumps and assassinates his way across the rooftops of the early medieval metropolis, and instead of wide open worlds, the focus is on narrow alleys, stealth and the tricks of the past – at least that’s what Ubisoft says.
Whether this will ultimately turn out to be a marketing stunt like the social stealthing in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, for example, we will only find out when we get to play the game ourselves. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on 12 October 2023 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is by no means the only game to experiment with atmospheric colour modes. In Ghost of Tsushima, for example, you can activate a black-and-white mode to make the duels more like the classic films by Akira Kurosawa.
Are you interested in such colour modes? Or is it a gimmick that you usually leave deactivated? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments – unfortunately, you can’t choose the colour of your characters.
