Free top titles instead of traditional premium games: Developer Ubisoft is focusing on a new business model from now on.

Top titles like Assassin’s Creed for 0 euros? Quite conceivable in the future. A representative of the developer studio Ubisoft announced in a conversation with investors last week that the company wants to focus on free titles from now on.

Triple-A level free-to-play games

Ubisoft’s spokesperson Frederick Duguet explained in the interview that they want to follow a different development process in the future. For example, in the past the developer worked on releasing about three to four premium titles per year. Now the focus will be on so-called “high-end free-to-play games”, as Rock Paper Shotgun reports. While games with a purchase price will continue to be part of the business model, free-to-play titles will play a bigger role from now on.

In the long run, these games should aim for the level of triple-A titles, Duguet said. This change in focus should serve to reach a larger player base for Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, he said. The games are also expected to be available for all platforms.

It is not known which specific titles the developer is working on. According to Duguet, however, all popular franchises are being targeted. Ubisoft’s works include series such as Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry or Anno.
