Atomfall is off to a record start, reaching 1.5 million players in just five days – the biggest success in the 32-year history of the development studio.

The post-apocalyptic open-world survival game Atomfall has achieved remarkable success for the British developer studio Rebellion.

Within just five days of its release on March 27, 2025, the game reached 1.5 million players, marking the most successful launch in the company’s 32-year history.

An impressive milestone for Rebellion

Rebellion, known for the Sniper Elite series, has broken new ground with Atomfall. The game, inspired by the real-life Windscale disaster of 1957, puts players in a fictional quarantine zone in rural England. There, they must survive in a world inspired by British science fiction and folklore.

Because the Atomfall, which we rated 78 points, has also been available since its release in Microsoft’s Game Pass at no additional cost , Rebellion does not report sales figures, but only speaks of players in a message on the short message service X (formerly Twitter). Rebellion did not reveal exactly how this number was calculated:

Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, expressed his delight at the success: “We are thrilled that so many players are enjoying Atomfall. Reaching 1.5 million players in such a short time speaks volumes about the creativity and dedication of our entire team.”

On Steam The Atomfall has achieved a record of more than 6,000 concurrent players – in mid-February, the role-playing game Avowed, which was also released in the Game Pass, had around 19,000 peak players and, according to Microsoft, almost six million players. Unlike Avowed, however, Atomfall is also available for PlayStation 4 and 5, in addition to the PC and Xbox versions.
Player interactions in numbers

In addition to the player numbers, Rebellion shared some interesting statistics about The Atomfall:

  • Over 316,000 players decided to eliminate the scientist at the beginning of the game.
  • More than 3.7 million opponents were defeated with the cricket bat.
  • A total of over four million pies were consumed and 300,000 cups of tea were drunk.

As if tea and cricket bats weren’t enough of a giveaway, CEO Kingsley emphasized at the launch that the game’s British identity:

»We are a British company and the game reflects this. Not only is it set in the beautiful English countryside, but it also draws inspiration from classic British books, films and TV series.«

The studio already has plans for DLC in the future, and the official press release hopes that »players continue to enjoy exploring the world of Atomfall and look forward to future content for the game.« As part of the approximately 25-dollar Deluxe Upgrade, a story add-on is scheduled to be released at a yet unknown date.
