Avatar 2: The Way of Water is currently making waves at the box office. The Pandora universe is thrilling millions of viewers, especially with its incredible visual impact – and of course many would love to glide through the jungle on an Ikran or dive through alien coral reefs themselves.
With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora a new action adventure game has been announced since 2021, in which we are supposed to experience exactly that. But when will the game be released and what exactly is it about? Here you will find all the important information.

Release: When will Frontiers of Pandora be released?
Originally, the release was planned for 2022, but was then postponed to an unspecified date. It is scheduled for release sometime between March 2023 and April 2024, we expect next year rather than this year.
Platforms: For which platforms will Frontiers of Pandora be released?
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A release for LastGen consoles is not planned.
Content: What kind of game will Frontiers of Pandora be?
According to the official announcement, it will be an action-adventure with an open world, which we will experience from the first-person point of view. The open world is of course the moon Pandora, which we already know from the movies and earlier Avatar games. This time we play a native Na”vi, not a human in the Avatar body. For the first time we also experience the western grassland plains, which can already be seen in the first teaser trailer:
Our enemies are the humans from the RDA, who mine valuable resources on Pandora with no regard for the complex ecosystem. Their mech suits can also already be seen in the few official screenshots.
The pictures also show the jungle of Pandora, so we will at least be making excursions into it – probably quite literally on the back of an Ikran. We can probably also tame the horse-like Pa”li and ride them. We don”t know if water creatures from Avatar 2 will also find their way into the game.
A leak from January 2023 allegedly reveals more gameplay details, however the original Reddit post about it is no longer available. It came from Eht_Hctins, who is said to have published accurate insider information in the past. We give you the content, but consider this info with a healthy portion of scepticism.
- Supposedly tamed animals also support us in battle.
- There are supposed to be loot and crafting systems.
- The focus will be on proper exploration instead of Ubisoft”s typical quest markers
- Dynamic weather events are said to have a direct impact on gameplay, for example you can”t fly an Ikran in a storm
All this alleged info sounds quite credible and fits with what has been shown so far. However, we”ll have to wait until the developers themselves finally show more official footage.
Canon: How does the game relate to the movies?
The game tells its own new story, but is part of the official canon. It is supposed to be set around the same time as Avatar 2, i.e. shortly after the return of the humans to Pandora. A few old acquaintances will appear, such as General Frances Ardmore on the side of the RDA.
Developers: Who is developing Frontiers of Pandora?
Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft Düsseldorf and Ubisoft Shanghai are responsible for the development, with Massive (Assassin”s Creed: Revelations, Far Cry 3, The Division 1 and 2), as the main developer. Film studios Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney are also involved. The studios face a daunting task, because so far all Avatar games have been nice entertainment at best. A real blockbuster has to offer a lot more:
When does Avatar continue in the cinema? After the huge success of Avatar 2: The Way of Water, the planned three sequels will also be released. Avatar 3 is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2024 and will feature a whole new species of fire Na”vi. Avatar 4 and 5 are then scheduled to follow in 2026 and 2028.
