Obsidian is postponing the release of Avowed to February 2025, even though the game is largely finished
Fans of the upcoming fantasy role-playing gameAvowedwill have to be patient: Developer Obsidian Entertainment has postponed the release date until next year. Originally, the game was supposed to be released in November this year – but that’s not going to happen
Why the delay?
According toThe VergeAvowed is nearing completion and should have been released in November as planned.
However, the decision to postpone is primarily of a strategic nature.Because Avowed would have been launched in difficult waters in the fall.
The overcrowding of the release schedule by other major titles such asStalker 2(November 20),Indiana Jones and the Great Circle(December 2024) and the expansionDiablo 4: Vessel of Hatred(October 8) play a decisive role in the postponement.
Stalker 2, although not developed by Microsoft itself, will be available as an Xbox and PC-exclusive title in the Game Pass directly at release and could outstrip Avowed.
The release ofDragon Age: The Veilguardplanned for November would also have been a major competitor – after all, both games are fantasy role-playing games, and Dragon Age has a much larger fan base.
There are also many other big-name titles such asCoD Black Ops 6(October 25),Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024(October 19) and the next bigAssassin’s Creed: Shadows(November 15). So it’s no wonder that Microsoft and Obsidian want to avoid the big competitors and release Avowed at a time when it has more room to breathe.
The new release date is February 18, 2025.According to The Verge, Microsoft wants to offer Game Pass subscribers a blockbuster even in the rather quiet time at the beginning of the year.
Since its first announcement in 2020, Avowed has raised high expectations: The mix of Skyrim-like gameplay and exciting setting, set in thePillars of Eternity universe, has created a lot of anticipation among many fantasy fans.
Although the delay may be disappointing for some of you, it could ultimately ensure that Avowed doesn’t get lost in the flood of fall releases. And hopefully also that Avowed is released in a more polished and mature state than many other big titles in recent years.
