You can use the shapeshifter’s mask to change your race afterwards. But the item is only in the Deluxe Edition – and the matter is complicated.
Baldur’s Gate 3 offers countless possibilities to shape your character according to your ideas – but hardly any to change your appearance afterwards. However, there is at least one item with which you can change your race even after the character editor. We explain how you can get it and what advantages it brings you.
How the shapeshifter mask works
First of all: You can’t just find this item in the world. It is a bonus of the Deluxe Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3. If you have already played the game in Early Access or pre-ordered it before release, then you have been upgraded to this edition at no extra charge. If you bought the standard version after release, the upgrade costs 10 Euro.
Where is the Shapeshifter’s Mask? It will automatically end up in your Traveller’s Chest in the Warehouse if you have the correct game version.
What can the Shapeshifter’s Mask do? The magical item allows you to change your race at will. And not just as an illusion as with certain spells, but really in physical form. You cannot manually adjust your new form to look as cool as our editorial characters, but instead take on a suitable default appearance until the next long rest. But it does have tangible gameplay benefits.
Why the mask can be incredibly useful
The mask offers some valuable advantages, especially for shady characters. For example, you can commit a crime as a human and then transform into an innocent tiefling. Or you can bypass an opponent who is prejudiced against certain races by pretending to be the spitting image of them. Or you knock down an opponent, change form and use “Talk to the Dead” so that he doesn’t recognise you as his murderer to whom he doesn’t want to talk.
Also very practical: your body takes on the characteristics of the chosen people. As a small gnome you can fit through small passages, as a halfling you can let the strong arms of a barbarian or fighter throw you onto ledges.
The mask is not tied to your character – you can also put it on other party members and change their race. You’re sure to find lots of creative uses for this thing!
