If you are particularly clumsy in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you will unlock a hidden, gloomy ending sequence.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can get up to all kinds of mischief, but then you also have to live with the consequences of your not so wise decisions. So that you don’t accidentally sabotage the main story, the developers have set you some additional limits. But if you really make an effort, you will be rewarded with a hidden and rather gloomy ending

What is it about?

Caution: If you haven’t reached act three yet and don’t want to be spoiled in any way, you shouldn’t read any further here!

In the last chapter of the role-playing game you collect the Netherstones, which are necessary to control the oldest brain. Without them, victory is impossible and the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 would have a much worse ending.

That’s why you can’t actually lose the stones for good. While they can be discarded, they can’t be thrown, so you won’t drop them into a deep ravine and be unable to reach them again. But as one YouTuber has found out, it is probably possible to place one of the stones in a barrel or sack and then get rid of it forever with a spirited kick.

This then does not lead to a crash or bug, but lets you experience a quick, and gruesome end. You can watch a video of this here. Unfortunately, we ourselves were not able to throw away the stones and thus reproduce the cutscene:

After an angry reaction from the Emperor, everything happens rather quickly: you are found by the Absolutes and turned into a Mind Flayer. This ends your adventure prematurely – with probably the worst possible outcome.

You won’t only encounter this scene if you lose one of the Netherstones, though. You can also meet this early end if you screw up in other ways An example would be if you kill the Emperor too early in the game, which leads to the same result

Have you ever managed to bring about the early end of the game? What did you do wrong? Or did you not even know that such an alternative ending of the story was possible? Have you already played through Baldur’s Gate 3 and how did you like the last part of the story? Feel free to write it in the comments!
