Baldur’s Gate 3: I’m glad I had cursed bad luck in the swamp

Actually, Dani is always a bit grumpy when she rolls straight A’s. But the fact that she flubbed a dice test several times makes her very happy in retrospect

“Such a fucking @!§” For the third time, I screw up that stupid dice test in the Sunlit Swamp and waste all my inspiration points on it. All because I’m curious as to why alarm bells are ringing at my druidess when she enters the beautiful and peaceful swamp dungeon.

In hindsight, I’m glad the dice luck left me at this point – because what follows are some of the funniest interactions I’ve had in Baldur’s Gate 3 so far.

Nothing is as it seems

Naturally, despite a messed up dice test, I notice right away that there is something wrong with this swamp. My party actually just runs through a small stream, but reaches the other shore bleeding and with open wounds.

Countless (failed) perception checks make me suspect something bad, but I haven’t even arrived at the witch’s hut yet. The quest that awaits me inside tells a cool story, lets me make absurd decisions and feels a bit like a dark fairy tale.

However, I’d much rather tell you about all the preliminary skirmishing I experienced before I could even set foot in the hut.

Of course, my druidess has to talk to animals all the time and everywhere. It’s a bit odd that the swamp is crawling with sheep, but hey, anything is possible in Faerûn, after all.

But instead of telling me in a friendly way about his carefree life and dandelions, the animal surprises me with an incredibly bad imitation of a sheep.

The memorized and very effortful “MÄÄH” is about as convincing as my portrayal of a bird in third grade school theater when I stuck a feather behind my ear and waved my arms.

Well, so be it. A sheep is allowed to be in a bad mood sometimes. But this seems to affect all animals in the swamp. A corner away, a crazed frog is waiting for me, attacking me and my companions out of nowhere.

The spell and the deception breaks when I try to pet another sheep. The sunny swamp turns into a squalid, musty hole. The fauna turns out to be redcaps, fierce and extremely bloodthirsty fairy creatures.

The best part: they don’t understand that I’ve seen through their little masquerade and continue to croak a disgruntled “MÄH” at me.

I love everything about this scene. For me, it’s these little things that make Baldur’s Gate 3 so fantastic – and I almost missed all of it. Well, luckily I was so damn unlucky with that dice roll!
