You won’t be able to rent your own servers for Battlefield 2042 or Battlefield Portal at release, the developers confirm.
Since the announcement of Battlefield 2042, players have been asking if the Rental Server Program (RSP for short) will return. This allowed players in previous Battlefield parts to rent their own servers and run them either privately or publicly with their own settings and rules.
Now it’s certain: At least at launch, there will be an RSP option neither for the normal multiplayer of BF2042, nor in Battlefield Portal. This is reported by the portal BravoIntel with reference to the Youtube channel Battlefield Nation.
The developers at Ripple Effect (formerly DICE L.A.) have told us that there will be no RSP at launch. They will look into the possibility after release, but are not committed to it.
Setting up private servers with password protection will therefore only be possible via Battlefield Portal. The server instances required for this will be generated by the manufacturer.
Is Portal an RSP replacement?
Instead of creating rental servers themselves, players can create their own game variants in Battlefield Portal and adapt them to their needs with the help of a multitude of setting options. In addition to a logic editor for custom rules, there will also be the option for kicks and bans of undesired users. Furthermore, private matches for closed communities or solo variants (against bots) can be created.
However, this is not a complete replacement for rental servers: If a player creates their own mode in Portal, it will be hosted as a server instance in EA’s cloud.
These servers are created together with a match and automatically closed again as soon as the last user leaves the server. Typical 24/7 servers that continue to run even when empty cannot be implemented with Battlefield Portal.
However, there should be exceptions to this: In a special area of the main menu, official creations and fan servers (curated by the developers) are to be offered, which will then be continuously available for a certain period of time
Third mode not yet revealed
With Battlefield multiplayer and Battlefield Portal now officially unveiled, the third and final game mode called Hazard Zone is still missing. It is speculated that it could contain elements from Escape from Tarkov, Hunt Showdown and Battle Royale.
All three pillars are part of the overall BF2042 package and share XP progression as well as the Season model with Battle Pass and new free content.
