Shirley Curry became world famous with her Skyrim videos. Now the Skyrim granny is saying goodbye and entering well-deserved retirement.

A Skyrim icon says goodbye: At the age of 88, American YouTuber Shirley Curry is hanging up her career and going into well-deserved retirement. With her Let’s Play videos, the probably oldest Skyrim player inspired millions of viewers and earned legendary status in the community.

Who is Shirley Curry?

Curry was born in 1936, long before the first video games appeared. She only found her way to the PC in her second life. Before her retirement in 1991, the American initially worked as a secretary in a candy factory and later as a saleswoman at the US retail chain Kmart.

In 1996, during her retirement, Curry started playing the classic turn-based strategy game Civilization 2 after an introduction by her son. Video games became Curry’s hobby, and she never let go. After she got a YouTube channel in 2011 to watch others play, Shirley Curry started uploading her own gameplay videos in 2015 – of Skyrim, of course.

Curry has been extremely successful with her videos. In 2022, she passed the one million subscriber mark on YouTube and received her gold play button. She also caught the eye of Bethesda, who promised to immortalize her as an NPC in the next Elder Scrolls game. However, it’s unlikely that Curry will be streaming it.

Why is she quitting?

In short, age is getting to Curry.Just in time for an upcoming eye operation, the well-known YouTuber announced that she no longer wants to record any new gaming videos in the future. The operation itself has only a limited to do with it – she’s fine, Curry said.

However, at 88 years old, she is simply too old and tired to continue with YouTube. She just doesn’t enjoy making videos anymore. We have embedded the entire farewell video of the Skyrim granny below:

Curry had already suffered a stroke two years ago, after which she had to struggle back into YouTuber life with great difficulty. The stroke had, of all things, taken away her memories of her numerous adventures in Skyrim.

But Shirley Curry doesn’t want to disappear from the internet completely. She promised to post updates on her state of health from time to time. If she feels like it, even in video form. Curry has also made a resolution: she definitely wants to play The Elder Scrolls 6 before she dies – just by herself and not on camera.
