Asus is working on the successor to its in-house gaming smartphones: The ROG Phone 8 is to be presented “soon”, but we can only speculate about the specs and price
In the field of gaming smartphones, Asus, the manufacturer known for PC hardware, has emerged as one of the best-known providers in recent years.
Just over six months ago, the company launched the seventh generation of its own smartphone series, the ROG Phone 7.
In our test, it impressed with its brute performance, but demanded an equally brute price, especially in the Ultimate Edition.
In the fast-moving smartphone business, half a year can be equated with half an eternity, which is why the successor is already in the starting blocks.
Asus has already published a first teaser for the ROG Phone 8 on the X platform formerly known as Twitter, which shows an extremely darkened glimpse of the new gaming smartphone.

However, the manufacturer did not provide much information, such as technical data, a specific release date or a price.
Instead, a few words are used to spark anticipation: “Beyond gaming” and “coming soon” are the only words Asus uses to describe the ROG Phone 8 – whether this is enough for a hyped announcement is up to each individual to decide for themselves.
At least we can estimate which specs are likely to be found in the ROG Phone 8 based on the previous generations
It is certain that Asus will once again use a Qualcomm CPU in its new gaming smartphone; in this case, it is likely to be the (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) . This consists of eight cores, the centerpiece of which is the Cortex X4 called “Prime Core” with up to 3.3 GHz.
There are also a total of five performance cores (Cortex A720) with a maximum clock speed of between 3 and 3.2 GHz. The SoC is rounded off by two Cortex A520s, which operate as efficiency cores at up to 2.3 GHz
The integrated graphics unit of the Snapdragon chip is upgraded to an Adreno 750. Overall, chip manufacturer Qualcomm promises up to 30 percent faster performance compared to its predecessor while simultaneously reducing energy consumption.
In view of Asus’ current gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 8 is also likely to rely on 16 GB of RAM again; the display is likely to continue to use an AMOLED panel and a refresh rate of at least 144 Hertz.
Whether the FHD+ resolution should be retained is being discussed, at least in the comments on the Asus announcement; fans would like to see a significant upgrade.
According to the comments, the “massive camera cluster” of the predecessor should also disappear – it remains to be seen whether Asus has taken the feedback on board.
