What is Call of Juarez: Gunslinger about?

The protagonist Silas Greaves is already a really cool sock. Because he knows them all: Billy the Kid, Jesse James, the Dalton brothers, no legend of the Wild West is foreign to him. At least that’s what he claims. At the beginning of the game, he enters a saloon and looks for curious ears that want to listen to his adventures. Do they all really happen? You’d best find out for yourself.

Greaves tells the listeners about his adventures while you replay them – and quite soon you notice that the memory of the ageing gunslinger doesn’t seem to be the best anymore. But that doesn’t matter, because the missions are entertaining and know how to entertain.

For example, it can happen that the level changes before our eyes, just because Greaves suddenly remembers that the story went a bit differently than he initially told it. And that’s not the end of the flag stand: bandits suddenly turn into Apaches, the weather changes from one second to the next and a bank robbery goes differently every time after a listener interferes.

So the gameplay is not only varied and surprising, but at the same time incredibly funny and cleverly staged. This is also ensured by the different locations, which, in the best Western style, range from run-down little towns to bridges paved with dynamite to scrapped paddle steamers.

If you come into contact with the enemy, you have several guns at your disposal to lend some weight to your arguments. Colts, rifles, shotguns – the usual western stuff. The shootouts are normal shooter fare, but are enriched by a stylish slow-motion mode and a point system for particularly successful shots. If you have enough points, Greaves will level up and you can improve his abilities.

For whom is the game suitable, for whom rather not?

As you might have already noticed: Friends of story-heavy games with a rather short playing time should get their money’s worth with Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Even if you don’t like the Wild West as a scenario, you should give the free title a chance.

Not for open-world fans: The staging and gripping story of Gunslinger also necessitate its linearity. You move through levels in the shape of a tube and are only allowed to deviate from the path when the story requires it. Those who grew up with the countless open worlds of the past decade might feel constricted in this game.

Have you already replayed the adventures of Silas Greaves and are also enthusiastic about the strong story? Then help the undecided greenhorns make up their minds in the comments and let us know what you like most about the game!
