Better patches than DLCs: Firaxis developer Civilization 7 is taking a big step towards fans with version 1.2.0 and bringing back old features.
Since its release, Civilization 7 has had a hard time on Steam. The player numbers lag behind those of the two previous games, and the user reviews are still only “mixed” (49 percent positive).
Many players continue to criticize the lack of depth, fluctuating balance, interface problems and technical issues, so the test was frustrating for us.The upcoming update 1.2.0, which the development team says will be released in April, could now address some of this – and in fact much more comprehensively than originally expected.

What does patch 1.2.0 bring for Civilization 7?
In a new blog poston the official website, the Firaxis team has announced that update 1.2.0 will include severalmajor and minor improvements The biggest surprise: a lot of content that was originally planned for later patches has been brought forward – apparently also in response to community feedback.
Here is an overview of the most important points:
Revised resources
-
-
- New resources: Ten new resources are added, each with their own events.
-
- Random resource generation: Resources now appear more randomly, creating varied strategies depending on the game and era.
- Hemisphere Identity: Certain resources, especially treasure resources, only appear in a specific hemisphere/continent, which should create more motivation to explore.
- Treasure resources: In addition to treasure fleets, these now also bring passive effects (like empire resources). Old resources such as horses and pelts also count as treasure resources.
- Further Adjustments and Balancing: There are balance changes and improvements to the resource system, as well as a planned improvement to the resource management screen.
- Future Changes: Expansion of features such as support for larger multiplayer games and Distant Lands launches.
Improvements in population growth (food)
- New growth formula: Population growth is now more consistent and faster, especially in the later game (change from cubic to quadratic calculation formula).
- Increased playability for food-based civilizations: Especially civilizations like Pachacuti benefit from the changes. Previously, investing heavily in food brought more disadvantages than advantages in the long term.
- AI Improvements: AI opponents should now be better at growing their empires.
Endless game mode
- Endless game mode: After winning the Modern Age, the game can continue to fulfill other victory conditions and achieve legacy path achievements.
- Future expansions: There are plans to support the “One More Turn” mode for individual ages as well.
Team multiplayer
- Team play introduced: Players share map view, relationships, and victory – the whole team wins when one member wins.
- Diplomacy and teamwork: No shared technology or legacy progression; teams can engage in diplomacy (except espionage), though.
- First version: Feedback is expected to further improve the feature.
Further updates
- Research Queue: Automatic pre-selection of necessary technologies or civilizations
- “Fix All” Option: Added to the production selection
- Reduced natural disasters: Reduced frequency on easy to moderate settings.
- Improved shoreline erosion: Adjustments to certain map types
- Bug fixes and UI tweaks: Further polishing and minor improvements.
When will patch 1.2.0 be released?
Developer Firaxis has announced the new update of Civilization 7 for April 22, 2025. However, this date is subject to change.
After that, the developers want to keep the entire month of May free for further improvements; players should not expect the next major patch until June The following features are planned:
- Automatic exploration
- Additional settings when starting a game
- New map types and map sizes
- Steam Workshop support
In order to develop these changes, the developers are also postponing the DLC release of the Right to Rule package (Right to Rule). “The team is prioritizing improvements to the main game at the moment, so we have decided to release this collection over the summer.”
What does the community say?
In the Reddit thread about the update a large number of players express optimism The announcement that content has been brought forward is seen by many as a good sign.
