Clownfield 2042

The first-person shooter Clownfield 2042 is a clear reference to Battlefield 2042. Whether EA will put up with it, only time will tell.

Steam lists a satire game called Clownfield 2042, which apparently takes aim at the stumbling shooter Battlefield 2042. Judging by first pictures and videos, the parody relies on a low-poly look and contains the typical Battlefield gameplay.

However, without multiplayer: Clownfield is exclusively designed for fighting AI opponents. The AI is pretty simple, but good enough for now, as developer Riverside Sports explains on (Steam). The entire description text literally drips with sarcasm.

What the game parodies

There are quite a few criticisms between the lines, for example in the description text, which parodies the story of BF 2042. And the game characters No-Pats simply become No-Clowns:

Clownfield 2042 is an FPS in which you take on the role of a unique soldier equipped with six weapons who must fight the enemy and win the front. After the Cryptocrash of 2022, most nations have collapsed and a union of “No-Clowns” has formed; and you happen to be one of them. Arm yourself and get ready for war.

It doesn’t stop there, the modes also imply a lot:

All Out Clownfare: the mode allows you to play with as many bots as your PC can handle, for instance. A clear allusion to the high player numbers of Battlefield 2042, which are accompanied by performance problems for many players.

Hovercraft Zone: In the Hazard Zone-verse you are supposed to be able to dart around with hovercrafts instead of playing as intended. Here we find a tip in the direction of Battlefield 2042’s balance problems.

Clownfield Gateway: Here you should be able to play a mode where you are all alone. This reference to Battlefield Portal is a reminder of the weakening player numbers, which often caused empty servers and few players, especially before the current free weekend.

If you’ve been avoiding Battlefield 2042 so far, you can currently see for yourself.

(There are eight free games this weekend)

How does EA react?

Whether the publisher of Battlefield 2042 will put up with the satire unchallenged, only time will tell. After all, Clownfield 2042 advertises with a logo that is very reminiscent of that of the parodied role model. So it is conceivable that EA lawyers will find legal points of attack here.

Clownfield 2042 is already scheduled for release on Steam on 31 December 2021. Assuming that development began at the time of the release of Battlefield 2042, there is just one and a half months of development time in it. And whether the release will actually go smoothly remains to be seen in view of the chutzpah displayed.
