AMD presents Ryzen 7000 at the computer fair in Taiwan. However, hints about the new graphics cards were missing.

AMD just opened Computex 2022 with its keynote. The computer fair in Taipei, Taiwan, is particularly exciting this year, as we are still expecting completely new processors and graphics cards. Unfortunately, AMD boss Dr Lisa Su only gave us information on one product line – Ryzen 7000. However, she did not say a word about Radeon RX 7000. In general, the company kept a very low profile.

New processors: AMD Ryzen 7000

We have already seen the new Ryzen processors from the 7000 series in action in the form of the top model with 16 cores, which will presumably be called Ryzen 9 7950X, very briefly at the computer trade fair CES at the beginning of the year.

It wasn’t much different at the keynote that just ended. Dr. Lisa Su held the CPU up to the camera as usual, Ghostwire Tokyo could be seen in the background along with the clock rates. The jump in megahertz is indeed enormous, as the Ryzen processor reaches 5.5 gigahertz. However, it is unclear how many cores are used – we assume one core. The maximum power consumption is 170 watts. An overview of the specs:

However, AMD has withheld benchmark tables from us. How much faster the CPU is in games compared to the current generation in the form of, for example, the Ryzen 9 5950X or the Intel Core i9 12900K is therefore unclear. In the Blender graphics suite, however, the Ryzen CPU still outperforms Intel’s flagship by 31 per cent.

For the first time with integrated graphics unit

With Ryzen 7000, AMD also integrates a graphics unit into the desktop CPUs for the first time. This was previously reserved for the APUs. The graphics chip is based on the RDNA-2 architecture, which is also used in the current RX 6000 graphics cards.

New platform: AMD AM5

Also new is the AM5 platform. All previous Ryzen CPUs were designed for AM4. The new platform also brings a new socket with more pins (LGA1781). This is joined by support for DDR5 memory and PCI Express 5.0, although the extent of PCIe 5.0 support depends on the chipset. Three versions of the 600 chipset have been announced:

  • X670X: PCIe 5.0 everywhere (fixed memory plus all PCIe slots), designed for extreme overclocking
  • X670: PCIe 5.0 only for the fixed memory and the graphics card, designed for enthusiast overclocking
  • B650: PCIe 5.0 for fixed memory only

In addition, AM5 boards will be equipped with up to four HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2 connectors.

We are a little disappointed, however, that Dr. Lisa Su didn’t say a word about the upcoming new graphics cards in the form of Radeon RX 7000. So the famous There is one more thing! was left out, not even the slightest hint was given.

What do you think? Are you equally disappointed that there were no benchmarks for the processors and no preview of the new graphics cards? Feel free to post it in the comments!
