Dead Matter, a survival game with a troubled history: Now the Steam release has been promised soon, along with major changes.

Dead Matter has long struggled with problems, albeit largely under wraps. The survival hopeful raised millions via crowdfunding since 2017. The promise of a gigantic open-world survival game with lots of freedom struck a chord with many players willing to pay.

Since then, however, only an early alpha version became available to backers. After a drama about the key allocation, the first players passed partly scathing judgements. Despite the declaration of secrecy, reports came to light about a rudimentary state of development and numerous missing elements. Doubts were raised as to whether developer Quantum Integrity was even up to its own vision.

Now the team is addressing the community in a new vlog. A release on Steam in Early Access is imminent. And they have learned from past mistakes, which is why the game is now to be launched in a much smaller version.

Shrinking for the Steam release

You can see the vlog with new gameplay from Dead Matter here:

The developers of Quantum Integrity Software explain that a lot has changed at the company since the alpha release. For example, they have recruited new employees who are said to have a lot of industry experience. A continuous production pipeline with regular updates – that is the self-declared goal.

For the Steam release, a solid, first Early Access version of Dead Matter is to be created. For this, the Open World will also be drastically reduced Now the action is concentrated on one city and some surrounding land. In the course of the Early Access, more areas are to be added bit by bit

The Zombie AI will be heavily reworked to allow for more believable behaviour and horde formation. New models are also being designed using Unreal Metahumans. This brings us to the next major change

Dead Matter is switching to Unreal Engine 5. In addition to more realistic zombie models through Metahumans, for example, the lighting technology Lumen is supposed to make for a prettier Canadian post-apocalypse.

A better system for loot is also said to promote immersion and create a sense of reward. In Dead Matter, specific loot should spawn in certain areas. For example, doctor’s clothes in hospitals, as is also common in the big role model DayZ. Later in the game, the hunt for better loot in dangerous areas is supposed to provide motivation.

What else is important?

In view of Dead Matter’s mixed development history, we recommend that anyone interested at least wait for user reviews on Steam before making a purchase.

When will Dead Matter be released? You can’t buy Dead Matter on (Steam) yet, but you can at least add it to your wishlist. The developers only communicated that the release date should be soon.
