The RTX 4080 is pushed to its limits
A new tech demo of Unreal Engine 5.4 shows what the latest version can do – and how quickly even high-end GPUs reach their limits.
This is why it’s important:The update to Unreal Engine 5.4 should bring some performance improvements. However, current tech demos don’t seem to have noticed much of this yet.
In detail:The “MxBenchmark PC” channel has uploaded a new video on YouTube showing the Unreal Engine 5.4 tech demo called “Forgotten Cemetery“.
- An RTX 4080 was used for the test runs, which really reaches its limits in the scenarios shown under “Epic” presets.
- In 1440p resolution, the RTX 4080 usually achieves 60 FPS, but even here there is slight stuttering.
- In native 4K resolution, the RTX 4080 moves in a range of 30 to 40 frames per second, but also suffers from stuttering here.
What’s changing with UE 5.4?Version 5.4 of the Unreal Engine has been available since April 2024 and promises some performance improvements.
- According to theofficial announcementparallelization has been improved in the new update: The improved utilization of multi-core CPUs should increase the frame rate and performance.
- In addition, automatic shader pre-caching is now available, which should benefit performance.
- Optically, the focus is primarily on improved rendering of glass materials and reflections with ray tracing.
Problems remain:The specialists at Digital Foundry have already taken a closer look at Unreal Engine 5.4 and determined that further improvements are absolutely necessary.
- So there is still stuttering, especially with shader compilation and stability of the frame times.
- Although some optimizations still need to be made for a “pleasant gaming experience”, Unreal Engine 5.4 is a significant step forward.
