Diablo 2: Resurrected has just been released and is apparently very popular. Too popular. The servers are buckling and players are reporting lost game progress.
And so the hosts of hell are unleashed. Diablo 2: Resurrected has been officially available for about an hour. It’s just a shame that the server load apparently can’t cope with the rush of players. About an hour after the release, complaints began to pile up on the net. Players even reported lost characters on Twitter and Reddit.
Here you get a timeline of the events and a current state of affairs, whether the problems persist or have already been fixed.
Update September 24: According to Blizzard, the servers have been restored in all regions. In our testing, we were indeed able to reconnect to Diablo 2: Resurrected and still had our game progress. However, it seems that isolated problems are still occurring, which Blizzard is now looking into.
[#D2R] Servers should be available again in all regions. We will continue to monitor performance. We've also applied a fix that should help unlock characters and will continue to review for any we've missed.

Update 22:10: According to Blizzard, there will be an “emergency maintenance” starting at 22:00, which will most likely last until 22:45.
[#D2R] We'll be performing emergency maintenance beginning at 1:00 PM (PDT) and lasting until approximately 1:45 PM (PDT)

Update: 21:50: Meanwhile Rod Fergusson, Executive Producer of Diablo has also spoken on Twitter. He promised that the server capacities will be increased and asks for patience. The increase in server capacity may lead to further restarts. However, it is not yet known when the problems will be completely resolved.
We've had tons of players online, which is great but has been a challenge for servers surpassing our testing. We know many players are still affected, so we're actively adding capacity and will keep on this until it’s in a better place. This may involve more restarts as well.

Update 20:30: The problems still do not seem to be fixed. Blizzard is working on a solution and continues to ask players to be patient.
[#D2R] We're continuing to work on problems affecting characters and game creation. Thank you for your continued patience today.

Update 7:10pm: Blizzard is shutting down the servers around 7pm for about 30 minutes. This is to fix the issues with game creation and character progression
To address game creation and character issues, #D2R will undergo unscheduled maintenance at 10am PT. We expect this maintenance to last 30 minutes. Players who are online and playing should logout before the shutdown if possible.

What preceded this
Shortly after the release of Diablo 2: Resurrected, a legion of waiting players got right to gaming. But those who have built an online character could now have problems. Since the servers are collapsing, players are losing progress.
Initially, it still seemed as if characters would be completely deleted. Several players are reporting this on Reddit
Are the characters gone forever?
Currently it seems that the characters disappear but then reappear in parts. Apparently, though, the server was reset after it went down. That is, it was restored to an earlier state. In the meantime, new reports are trickling in that speak of lost levels.
No matter what the case is: It’s best to wait until the servers stabilise a bit. Otherwise, you currently run the risk of losing all or a little progress in Diablo 2: Resurrected.

What does Blizzard say?
Not much at the moment. Of course they have the problem on their radar and are providing players with updates via Twitter.
[#D2R] We're currently looking into issues that prevent some players from seeing existing characters or creating new characters.

So the developers are working on both the server problems and the fact that some players can no longer see their characters. We will keep you updated.
