From now on, the online service will cap the size of files sent via Discord at 10 MB. If you want to send larger files, you have to compress them – or take out a paid subscription

Discord has reduced its upload limit for all users without a subscription to 10 MB per file. This was announced by the online service on its website. Previously, the limit was 25 MB.

The company justifies the decision with financial and business decisions. While many users are annoyed and question these reasons, the competition is having a laugh about it online.

“Memory management is expensive ”

Discord’s explanation ispart of a Q&A about Nitro, the subscription to the online service. When asked why Nitro is needed to upload files larger than 10 MB, the answer is:

Every day, millions of files are uploaded to Discord and stored securely for your future access. Managing storage is expensive, so we regularly review how users use Discord and what their storage needs are. Our data shows that 99% of users store files less than 10 MB in size.

In order to maintain our service without compromising on storage quality, we have decided to lower the limit for free file uploads. Unlike other platforms, we store your files for as long as you need them, so it’s important that we manage our storage space sustainably.

The statement has been met with criticism from users– for example in thesubreddit discordapp One user notes that, according to the company’s own statement, 99 percent of users remained under the old limit of 10 MB anyway and therefore a change was not really necessary

Others complain that they now have to compress their already compressed files even more. Still other users see this as a blatant attempt by the company to attract more paying customers for a subscription. The subscription prices range between €2.99 and €9.99 per month or €29.99 and €99.99 per year.

But while users are annoyed, the competition is reacting with malice.Under the corresponding post of thePortal Dextero on X, formerly Twitter, theOnline service TeamSpeakcomments on the innovations at Discord.

You can see a video of the 2017 World Player of the Year award ceremony, where Cristiano Ronaldo was honored. In the 15-second clip, the Portuguese player raises his fist to the applause of the audience, then walks onto the stage and hits FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, who is holding the trophy in his hand.

A sideswipe that does not go uncommented by the X-Community– both positive and negative. And we also asked the GlobalESportNews -Community a few years agoabout their preferred program. The result was clear back then.

This is not the first drastic change for Discord this year. In January 2024, the company laid off 170 employees, 17% of its workforce. The aim was to save costs.

In addition, Discord announced in April that it would be running sponsored ads to increase revenue. This represented a departure from the company’s previous positions. As recently as 2021, Discord CEO Jason Citro had spoken out against advertising on the online service
