The last big highlight of the Switch 2 Direct is a real monkey business of a special kind.

Mario looks in the tube: At the big Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the last big title revealed at the event was not a successor to Mario Odyssey, but a brand new Donkey Kong game: Donkey Kong Bananza!

26 years after the release of Donkey Kong 64, fans of the cool ape are finally getting a true 3D successor. And the first gameplay material definitely whets the appetite for more.

Donkey Kong smashes his way through

And what does Mario do when he gets stuck? He yells Mamma mia!

And what does Astro Bot do when he gets stuck? He flies over the obstacle!

And Donkey Kong? In Bananza, he simply smashes everything to smithereens with his fistsand clears his way through the game world.

What at first sounds like blind destructive rage… well, it probably is, after all, DK is still DK. But demolishing the large 3D game world is also a central gameplay element, as the above trailer shows.

This means you can dig your own paths, tear down obstacles, throw boulders at enemies, and much more. Treasures also need to be beaten out of the rock first. We suspect that Nintendo will use the new mouse feature of the Switch 2 for some of the fisticuffs.

The release date is also already known: On July 17, 2025, Donkey Kong Bananza will be released exclusively for the new Nintendo Switch 2.

Well, what is your opinion of the new Donkey Kong game? Did you, like many other DK fans, also cheer loudly in front of the screen? Or would you have been more excited about a new Mario title? Feel free to let us know what you think of the game and which of the titles shown was your personal favorite!
