Bioware’s role-playing game is not suitable as a series, according to one of the authors – but David Gaider has other suggestions

The Fallout series is currently showing once again that video games can work really well as TV productions. The Last of Us was already a huge success. Fans are now wondering which other series might also have the potential to become a good series.

According to the lead writer of Dragon Age, David Gaider, his fantasy story is definitely not one of them. But the author knows which games he would much rather make into films.

“Just an ordinary fantasy story “

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, user Darren Lucas asks which games should get a TV series next after the success of the Fallout or The Last Of Us series

Gaider, who has not worked for Bioware since 2016, replied that everyone would now assume he would suggest Dragon Age, but he thinks it “a terrible idea”.

He would rather see a adaptation of Disco Elysium , in the style of director David Lynch (1984’s Dune, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet). Or Banishers

How does the author justify his attitude?

According to Gaider, games like Dragon Age, but also Elder Scrolls or Baldur’s Gate, become “pretty ordinary fantasy stories” if you take away the interactivity of the video game medium

While he doesn’t think it’s impossible to make series out of it, it would take quite a lot of work to filter out the elements that are unique and interesting.

What about Mass Effect? Gaider also sees little reason for a series in Bioware’s sci-fi trilogy. As with Baldur’s Gate 3, he explains that he finds it difficult to imagine something   “that he hasn’t already seen dozens of times “

What about series for Bioware games? In December 2022, an animated series called Dragon Age: Absolution, which takes place between the last installment Inquisition and the Dreadwolf currently in development, was released on Netflix. According to Gaider, he has never seen it and has no interest in it. A series is also planned for Mass Effect, which, like Fallout, is to be realized by Amazon. However, there is no concrete information about the project yet.

David Gaider is of the opinion that games like Dragon Age don’t work as a series because they were designed as interactive experiences. Is he right or does a series like Fallout prove that it is possible with the right implementation? Do you feel that video game adaptations have now left their bad reputation behind?
